We checked the website and it said that the restaurant was open until 12:00am so we walked up from the Rogers center to the restaurant. When we arrived the hostess at the door told us that the inside restaurant was closed but we could still sit on the patio. It was 11:13 pm. We went to the patio and as we walked out we overheard the bartender saying "I wish she would stop sending people out here, we are closed!" We walked up, and she very rudely told us that we missed last call. There were still 3 tables on the patio. I stated that they were supposed to be open for another 45 minutes and she snapped that because they were slow they were closing early and we were out of luck. Very rude. We went back inside to advise he hostess and she said that she could get us a beer but that was it. Awful service. We are visiting from the east coast and were very disappointed.
The restaurant is downstairs and so a bit dark. The margaritas are expensive but very good. (2 for $19.00). The menu is quite small. There are 3 apps guacamole, ceviche and pico de gallo. The guac and pico were served with home made chips and were very good. For mains there are 10 taco choices. We tried brisket and chicken verde. They were good. There are also chilaquiles, fundidos and chicharrons. All of these can be made with meat or veggie toppings. I had the fundido with brisket which was so delicious. If I were to go back I would go as a happy hour destination or as a tapas break. The service was speedy and pleasant.
Met a couple of friends here (Thursday night). Atmosphere was fun. Food was ok. The pico de gallo was really good though AND the churro ice cream sandwich was one of the best things I have ever eaten.I was just a little disappointed with my tacos...everyone else in our party really enjoyed there tacos...so maybe its just me on this one. Ladies washroom was kind of gross and the service wasn't the best. No one really checked to see if we wanted anything else. We ended up ordering dessert from another waiter (not the one assigned to our table). I had a good time though! Totally worth a visit.
I visited El Caballito twice while in Toronto. First, I had guacamole and chips along with their margaritas, which was great. I liked that they served quinoa chips, which I rarely see in restaurants. I also had a brunch for a large party, and this went very well. The food was great and the staff very helpful in setting up the event as well as making sure it went well. The spicy margarita is killer, and everyone liked the food. It's a fun place in a great location.
We came to El Caballito for brunch on a Saturday. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us right away. I really enjoy the atmosphere in this place, however, it was extremely dark. The only light at that table was a tiny burned down candle, which made it extremely hard to see. I feel like a little more light wouldn't ruin the atmosphere and make it easier for guests to read the menu. Their brunch menu is small but offers great brunch options with a Mexican twist. I ordered the churro pancakes which weren't as delicious as I would have hoped, but still good. My friend ordered the eggs benedict with chipotle sauce and guacamole and it was delicious! I'll definitely order that if I ever visit again for brunch.Unfortunately the service was a little bit slow, but the food did come out fast. Overall, it was a good experience. I will definitely be back to El Caballito to try some tacos in the future.
