Random walk-by discovered this restaurant. was not very busy, so went in and had a bite to eat. really friendly staff. some fish dishes, but also hawn, harbour, bark meat and duck. the crispy Vietnamese rolls are great. the restaurants homemade chili-relish is spicy...and really good.
There seems to be a reawakening of culinary proportions over the last few years on Stockholm’s Hantverkargatan near Fridhemsplan. Older establishments are giving way to newer eateries, sometimes with surprising results. Take Restaurang Springrolls for example. A clean, fresh take on Vietnamese classics that utilizes...fresh ingredients and herbs to deliver a quiet stoic meditation on a cuisine that can often be tough to recreate outside of traveling to Vietnam. Inevitably there will be some westernization of a dish, as pungent fish sauce or unctuous gutsy shrimp paste can turn even the most adventurous palate ‘sideways.’ And this might have occurred at Springroll’s, but wisely, the decision of whether to go for broke, or sit safely in your appetite’s comfort zone, is left up to you. So I gladly take on Springroll’s Chả Cá Lã Vọng, a dish their menu proudly reminds us is one of ten top dishes one must eat at least once in one’s lifetime. A concert of herbs, veggies and perfectly seasoned and simply fried Tumeric Perch sitting atop rice noodles await my decision: to sauce or not to sauce? A trio of fish sauce, peanuts and shrimp paste are delivered along with an empty bowl to combine these favors as one wishes. I utilize all three. Chả Cá Lã Vọng is not the same without it. True to Southern Vietnamese culture, the fish sauce is sweeter, helping to enrich the deep tumeric smoke emparted to the perch during frying. The shrimp paste pulls the dish towards a traditional funky note that is the real reason why you must not miss this dish in your life. Add a generous heap of dill, chilis and veggies and this dish is bonkers good. I want more. sauce, more paste, more. Just more. We also order Duck breast seasoned with cinnamon, anise and orange. Though this dish has awesome potential, the plate we were served presented us with a sliced duck breast well past medium. Duck needs to be a good medium rare for it to be enjoyable. As the flavors were complimentary we intend to return and give this dish a second try. Our last entrée plate arrives...Springroll’s namesake: eight pieces of springrolls and apps on a platter as much art as food. Shrimp speared by sugar cane; a riff on Dolmas, with tasty ground beef in the centered of tender steamed leaves; oh so fresh prawns in equally fresh wrappers; and finally Fried spring rolls with meat and shrimp and more veggies. We are instructed to wrap each springroll in a lettuce blanket with a spring of fresh mint, basil and romaine. Dunked into springrolls’ nuoc cham, we decide we never want to have a crispy springroll without fresh herbs again. I think what makes Springroll a pleasant place to eat is not only the ease and comfortable decor inside of it’s Hantverkargatans location, but the easy and thoughtful play on traditional dishes one may or may not have had before. As I finish up by chewing on my sugar cane skewer, like a child at a fairground, I am surprised again how great it goes with the fried shrimp surrounding it. And how great Springroll goes with this neighborhood. Drop in. Give it a try. And don’t forget to crack open a cold 333.
Since the rating is a 9,2 on tripadvisor, I expected really good vietnamese food.. I started with the fresh springrolls as a starter, I was surprised that I got 1,5 springroll for 85kr and it wasn't even stuffed very well. I had the beef salad,...which was pretty OK but also a bit plane. The vietnamese coffee had very little condensed milk in it, should be more. Overall, not very satisfied about the food
We ate here a few days ago and the food was extraordinary. the staff were very warm to our nutritional needs and the place has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. as I mentioned in the title, the first cure was so delicious, we ordered it right away...again! the shredded lamb was the outstanding main course. an excellent restaurant with delicious food.
