Callaloo - St. Petersburg

Bug in my appetizer kinda turned me off. The staff was great though they went out of their way to try and make up for that! Sat us right next to a huge birthday party so we couldn’t even hear each other and that really sucked because this was the only time we got to meet up with these friends while they were here on vacation so it was a little disappointing because we won’t see them until next year!

Well, the service was a little slow at the beginning. The appetizers was good, but they didn’t have lobster for the lobster Mac and cheese. The regular Mac and cheese is different from the lobster Mac and cheese. The regular Mac was like out the box. The grits was runny. Maybe it was a off night, but we probably won’t go again, since it’s in st. Pete and we live in Riverview.

This was our first time trying Callaloo and we loved it! It is comfortably decorated and we were seated promptly. We found the food to be homemade and plentiful. There is a good choice of wines that are reasonably priced. We started with the brisket rolls which had lots of brisket in them. They were 2 good size rolls that came with a sauce and some of the restaurants Super slaw. Different and very good. In fact you find many of the items on their menu to be things you don’t find in other restaurants. I tried the Callaloo stew which was very flavorful and my husband felt the same about his chick pea and chorizo soup. For entrees, we went with the Masitas y Plantanos, pork chunks and plantains and 2 sides and the pot roast and mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious. All the staff were pleasant and welcoming. Our server was Maya who couldn’t have been nicer. Maya was Very professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the food. We loved our experience at Callaloo and definitely plan on returning.

Was disappointed the only option for Sunday Brunch was the $28 buffet. I prefer fresh cooked meals and not to overindulge too much. However, the buffet food was tasty for what it was. The service was poor with our server doing double duty as the bartender and having tables. Drinks were very slow to get to us and we had to put used buffet plates on an empty table to make room for our second trip. There was lots of other staff there that could’ve helped. Sad to see the restaurant was practically empty. I think it’s a good concept but execution is poor.
