As we walked up to the charming old lodge, we were greeted by two dogs lounging on the porch and a black cat strutting confidently around. Being dog people, we smiled and gave the dogs a friendly pat. Right away, I felt like we were visiting family. Inside, the aroma of breakfast welcomed us. The atmosphere felt just like Grandma’s house—clean, well-maintained, with lovely decor that was both inviting and comfortable. We moved into a cozy dining room with about eight booths, where we were greeted with smiles (behind masks) and shown to our seats. The space was spotless and warm, just like something out of a nostalgic memory. As we browsed the menu filled with classic breakfast options, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of Fat Carl being just some guy. We ordered French toast and a half order of biscuits and gravy. Luckily, I decided to hold on to the menu because when I flipped it over, I discovered it contained a delightful and funny biography of Fat Carl, the cat. It concluded with a touching message: "Enjoy the company of the people you’re with. After all, you humans only get one life. Take it from someone who’s lived eight." We will definitely return, without a doubt. Animal lovers must make a stop here! Fat Carl's, keep up the fantastic work! Great food, wonderful staff, and a charming little lodge—we will always support your lovely establishment!
We decided to return for breakfast the next morning, but were met with rudeness from the same owner/server. After being seated, all four of us quickly realized we should leave. My aunts were shocked and genuinely saddened by how we were treated, which was disheartening for me since they are such kind-hearted people. The owner had mentioned the day before that the Spruce Lodge and restaurant were for sale because they were tired. I understand that, but if you're in the service industry, why let your standards drop in the final stretch? Potential buyers, take note! As frequent travelers between Denver and the southwestern corner of Colorado, we will never return to this place. Instead, we’ll be stopping at Tiny Timbers down the road, which the owner even directed some customers to as closing time approached on our first visit.
I was really disappointed with the lack of basic COVID precautions at this restaurant. There's a sign on the door suggesting that masks are optional for indoor dining. Trust me, you definitely don't want to eat at places that ignore fundamental safety standards. It's an easy way to get sick. I won’t be returning here.
This restaurant is a fantastic spot for a traditional breakfast! The portions are generous and the food is delicious. Animal lovers will truly appreciate this little gem!
This is hands down the best breakfast I've ever experienced! The apple cinnamon French toast is incredible, and the homemade biscuits are a true delight! The ham is out of this world—definitely not your typical grocery store variety!
