Sotoura Beach - Shimoda

We went in early October and it was still warm. It was easy to park next to the beach. It’s good because you can beat some of the crowds at the surrounding beaches, but there was more trash than is comfortable in the sand and in the water. If I could give it a more specific rating it would be 3.8, but 4 stars because it’s actually a decent beginner-friendly surf spot too.

Easy to get to beach. Parking was convenient and the showers were nice as well.

Not as crowded as Shirahama beach. Out of the beaches in Shimoda, Sotoura is our top pick. It is family friendly and you can definitely have a good time with your kids. Waves are not that strong. They have public showers which costs 500yen per 5 minute and some floaters rental. The parking lot is conveniently located so you don’t have to worry much if you have lots of stuffs to bring.

Scenic beaches. Absolutely this place is worth a visit! The ocean water is very clear and beautiful. We found crabs, hermit crabs, shrimp, and lots of little fish on the rocks on the beach! Restrooms and restaurants are also available on this beach. The waves on Shimoda's beaches tend to be high. However, the locals tell us that this beach is suitable for small children because the waves are weak. Shimoda Station provides information on some of the beaches to see if swimming is allowed that day. Other beaches were closed for swimming due to high waves, but this beach was still open for swimming that day! Perfect beach for families!
