In Feb 2019 I called this business to cater a brunch baby shower on March 2nd, 2019. I was told she may have an event that day so she 'd call me back. A few days later she confirmed she can do my event on Mar 2nd. After negotiations via e-mail and texts, we agreed on a price and a brunch menu. This was helpful since I live in NYC and was planning a shower in Delaware. I paid a 50% deposit, but I waited 2 weeks for a contract and the first version didn 't have all of the items agreed upon. Finally the final version was e-mailed. The subject of the e-mail said Mar 2nd. Two days before the shower, I text the owner to confirm the address to pick up the food on Mar 2nd. She told me the address and I let her know that I will be coming for 10am, since the shower starts at 12pm. She said not a problem. On Mar 2nd I arrived at 11am due to snow, there were pans of food on the counter and I was excited. I paid the remainder and the owner said what time are you coming next week? Confused and out of breath I informed her the event is today. She said omg, can I show her the menu and she 'll see what she can do. I was confused and close to having a panic attack. I waited 2 hours for her to make food by herself, even though there were 4 people working there; one of which was on a break. The quality of the food suffered due to this, the pans were half full and she was missing 1 major item. When I inquired with the cashier on my order, she grilled me on what I ordered? I said I 'm the big catering customer she knows I 'm waiting here. The rude cashier wouldn 't check the status until I recited everything on the menu. As I started reading the 10 menu items she walked away. That was pointless. Since she was missing a main entree, the owner agreed to give me a $100 refund. This took the cashier another 30 minutes to try and figure out. At this point the shower had clearly started and everyone was asking what is going on with the shower. I asked the cashier to call the owner to hurry and figure it out and she gave me attitude. Strange. When the owner finally came out she gave me $100 cash and she packed up trays and bunsen burners in a plastic bag. I agreed I 'd have someone return the trays the next day. She apologized for messing up the date and said she 'll hook up whoever returns the trays. When the trays were returned, she charged the person $20 claiming that I didn 't pay for the burners. Which is odd, because I was given a refund and I didn 't know after all of that I still had to pay for the burners. She also didn 't stick to her word about hooking up the person with food. I 'd be weary about booking this business for an important event. But I will say the food was pretty good.
I love this place, great portions, good food and reasonably priced.
The restaurant was empty. We were a little skeptical to enter but decided to take a chance and give it a try. We are happy that we did! This is authentic soul food! Super seasoned, salty, flavorful and phenomenal all in one! We ordered the grilled flounder stuffed with crab and accompanying sides of mashed sweet potato and cabbage. We also ordered the general tso 's shrimp with a side of macaroni and cheese and string beans. I know you like how we tried to keep it healthy with a starch and a vegetable on each plate! While most of the food here was overcooked (those string beans were not bright green whatsoever! , that is traditional soul food cooking. Check out my photos! The cabbage was almost opaque! But there were cooked to a soft and tender melt-in-your-mouth cabbage with a taste that I come to love being from the south and having memories of family cooking. No complaints here thought. I know what I signed up for when walking into this restaurant. I went in looking for soul food and I got exactly what I asked for. Don 't come here expecting al dente pasta and crispy vegetables. You come here for slow-cooked southern-style food. You won 't be disappointed. Given that everything is made to order, keep in mind you must BE PATIENT. While there was literally only two other customers in the entire restaurant, we still waited almost an hour before our food came out. AND WE WERE HAPPY THAT WE WAITED!! Most important advice here ... Be patient. The food if worth the looooong A wait.
Irene was absolutely wonderful. We had a going away party for an employee that was leaving and she was able to accommodate us last minute (can't guarantee she can do the same for you so please book in advance). She also has vegan options if requested.
