The Fat Abbot - Selby

We were warmly greeted by a young assistant and escorted to our reserved table. We were provided with a bottle of water and then waited for our order to be taken. We had to flag down another server to take our order as the young lady assisting us seemed preoccupied.

I had previously visited this restaurant for drinks and had a positive experience, so I decided to return for a meal. However, I was disappointed this time. The staff seemed disengaged, we were asked to move tables three times without a clear explanation, and we encountered an abrupt older man and a young, surly girl who did not react well to feedback. The restaurant was also quite small.

I would just give this place a miss. Called in for drinks just before Christmas, it’s pretty awful, the bar service is terrible, it’s pretty expensive and the place is scruffy. Won’t go again.

Dropped into this place on the way back from a weekend in York and was glad we did. Beautiful Sunday lunch, with fresh veg and mouthwatering lamb of shoulder and beef. Excellent service and quality food for a good price (two courses for £19.95) We'll be back again.

There were too many young and inexperienced staff. All very polite. It's not their fault but the service wasn't managed well. The food is average at best. I stayed at the adjoining hotel and tried the room service as well. Bad mistake.
