My family and I visited the Cones and Characters this evening and when we walked in the decor was very pleasant and exciting. Though several tables were set as if the restaurant was closed, and several had shakey tables or were covered in sprinkles or dried chocolate syrup. We walked in and it was a ghost town. We thought maybe we had intruded past closing hours even though we arrived four hours being the closing window. The restaurant itself was dimly lit, and the floors weren 't as clean as majority of restaurant standards. We walked to the counter near the far end of the restaurant and no one was there, we peeked back and there wasn 't any staff in the back area. We were shocked because it was quite silent. We had to ring a bell for service, I found it inconvenient because staff should be present or at least aware of the front-half of their restaurant for safety, security, and overall representation of their business. Once a staff member finally arrived at the counter they had asked us to order and then be seated, and we had to read off dimly lit, faded, dirty menus posted on the walls. I felt it was odd since it was our first experience and felt very odd. Usually in restaurants you 'd expect a present staff, a person to seat you and someone to provide menus to the tables. I 'd also like to point out that the entrance of the restaurant outside has a section with a list of food options such as: poutine, chicken fingers, etc. Yet no where in the inside of the restaurant were those options shown so we mistook it for being a mistake outside and didn 't order any food.Once we ordered three shakes and one banana split, it took nearly forty minutes to revive our orders, I believe due to their being only one present (to our knowledge) staff member. And during our wait we decided to play one of the crane machines they had available which had eaten out loonies and was broken. We tried bringing it up but were just taken into account, we didn 't get our money back. When our orders arrived, they looked appetizing and were quite filling, we were shocked at the portion of banana split, it 's way more than a standard split, for those who are looking into ordering one. The shakes were enjoyable, yet they used these thin wide plastic, yes plastic, straws that were very hard to drink from since quite the amount of space in the cup was just the added whipped cream, chunks of brownie (fudge brownie shake) and thick chocolate syrup. Apart from that, the rest of the experience was quite good, though there were no staff to say goodbye to as they just disappeared. One note: please seat somewhere away from the ac, it gets very cold once you consume the ice cream, the only displayed item category of menu.
I went to this restaurant recently and I'd say it was pretty good. There were many options, and I ordered a s'mores shake. It didn't take that long to come, but it tasted a bit off. I also liked the comic strip table as well, it was a nice touch. However, the tables weren't properly cleaned and I could see a bit of another shake.Overall: 3/5, would recommend.
What a sweet (pun intended but also appropriate) little gem this turned out to be! So many treat/dessert choices, amazing, nostalgic atmosphere inside, and delicious ice cream in my belly now! We will definitely be back!
SLOWWWW SERVICE! So many people waiting in line for their orders for over 20 mins!! You have to ring the bell to get serviced even though they can hear you coming in! Not worth it for the time spent.
