Hana Japanese Restaurant - Sarnia

We make every excuse to go back to Hana. Best sushi anywhere and we'll drive the hour to go. Broad selection menu, excellent staff and great atmosphere.

Our waitress was very attentive, so that was nice. Some of the food is pretty good, nothing fabulous. Other things could use some improvement. We had:- Avocado Roll (great!)- Spicy Crispy Salmon Roll (great!)- Sautéed Mushrooms (don't bother)- Tempura Broccoli, Mushroom, Sweet Potato (all good)- Tempura Shrimp (super tasty!)- Tempura Crab (not good at all, didn't eat it)- Edamame- Mozzarella Sticks (dry)- Crab Puffs (okay)- Stuffed Mushrooms (meh)- Vegetable Fried Rice (meh)We had a few other things too but I can't remember the name of them. I think that the sushi rolls are pretty good quality but the rest of the menu items are not that great. I don't think we will return for a while, many of the things were lukewarm or dried, like they have been sitting at a buffet table for hours and hours.

Sounds confusing, I know. This being our first visit, we did not know what to expect, as the menu items had no prices. So, we learned that it's a buffet where you pick items from a menu, not an actual buffet food area. There are more than 100 items to choose from, and not every item has a picture, so it's a bit of a challenge to know what to pick. You place your order by writing your food choices - matching the number on the menu - on an order list for your table that you hand to your server. I saw the warning that said there would be an extra charge for food that was not consumed. This will keep you from choosing more than you need, but also stop you from trying something unfamiliar.Our server was very helpful, brought us soup and salad for starters so we had an idea of what we could pick. And brought us more of what we especially enjoyed. Some of the items are single items while others come with 6 to the plate. Most everything we chose was delicious. The only surprise was that the eggroll is not like a Chinese eggroll that you might expect, but more like sushi. Dessert is included with your meal, but we were quite full without needing dessert. There are certain items that you can order only at dinnertime.The cost of the buffet is pretty pricey - $23.99 for dinner, $20.99 for seniors, cheaper at lunch, and less for young children. We thought we would pay less if we could order a la carte, as there is only so much that you can eat at a sitting. Plus, if you tried a few things each visit, it would encourage you coming back more often.

Looking for a Mother's Day surprise? Well, you will get one here when you get your bill! We went today at 11:30 for lunch, our waiter presented the "Mother's Day" special as though it was a deal, they're doing the dinner menu ALL day...what they neglected to mention was they are actually charging dinner prices ALL day! So our lunch for 2 adults ended up being $65 for LUNCH which is insane! Admittedly Hana has good food, but it's by no means THAT good, there is NOWHERE in Sarnia that has food worth $65 for lunch! As we were leaving I heard a number of people just as upset as we were! That little "surprise" was actually WAY out of my budget so there goes lunches for the rest of the week for me, thanks Hana! Up until this experience Hana USED to be my absolute favorite place to go eat, now I will never return! I feel bad for the large groups of people we saw come in after us, who's bill will be a surprise $50-100 more than they were counting on as well! Please let your friends know, this unethical practice has ruined my day, possibly even my week, I hope to prevent it from ruining anyone else's! There was NO signage to let you know of the price hike, there was no verbal warning to advise of the price hike, as I said our waiter presented it as though they were offering the dinner MENU all day (you know the 5-10 items only available during dinner which we didn't even order any of it anyways!) it was NOT explained or even remotely implied that we would be charged dinner prices at 11:30 in the morning!

We have been a regular customer of Hana and today is the last time we will attend. We have seen the service greatly decline over the past few months. Servers are rude, uninformative and they have issues with the language. Supposed to be all you can eat sushi but it takes forever to get your food. Should be all you can wait.
