We tried Sicilia Nostra on our last night in Sicliy .The staff were very welcoming especially towards our two small children. We had the set menu; a traditional Sicilian antipasti which is different from the traditional Italian one. It consisted of a variety of locally sourced ingredients such as peppers with couscous, aubergines, mushrooms, onions, spinach fritatta and other wonderful delights. The main for me was a meat feast consisting a large home made sausage with pork, herbs and tomatoes, a meatball, and the largest pork steak I've ever seen. All were cooked on a large barbecue right in front of us. A pasta dish was the alternative which was half ragu and the other half was made with fennel, so one half of the plate was red and the other was green. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her meal. Mine was equally delightful with the succulent pork steak and sausage, together with a basic salad. The next course was unexpected, the owner, Giovanni brought us a glass each, half filled it with red wine and then poured locally grown chopped peaches which were excellent. The dessert we had was home made gelato. we all had diiferent flavours, each one equally sublime. The staff throughout were attentive, polite and service was quick. Our last evening in Sicily was made memorable by Sicilia Nostra and would thoroughly recommend it. The white wine was made by the owners which was so good, we bought a litre bottle to take home 2 Euros) A true rustic Sicilian restaurant definitely worth a drive out to.
Having visited the big Chestnut tree on a trip up Mt Etna we were looking for a light lunch, however, we found an extensive and really tasty full on lunch. Great food and friendly service surrounded by local families out for New Year's Day. Bring an appetite!
Sicilia Nostra is recommended in the guidebooks and, since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to see the One Hundred Horse Chestnut Tree. It is one huge tree but I would not go out of my way to get there. On the other hand, the restaurant rests on its laurels. The food was excellent. The vegetarian antipasta was exceptional as were the pasta dishes we had.
It was the end of a terrible day, wife and I arguing, kids playing up in the back of the car, 4 1/2 hrs of italian drivers... this place was chosen because it had the best rating in the immediate area. we turned up at 8pm to be told there was only one table not reserved and did we know that it was a fixed menu. well, we did know that, but the place was deserted. The food is great, basic stuff done well. Antipasto was vegtables and just delightful with wonderful olives, aubergine and things the names of which I didn 't know. Pasta course was two pastas, an uncut macaroni in a ragu and a filled pasta with pistachio. We were full, but then we had pork chop, sausage meat and a cheese filled meat ball. litre of basic red wine and we were very content, the terrble day forgotten. left with every table full. 100 euros for 4, apparantly, some say too much, well, if they were talking about the food, they were correct. Will never get a Michelin star, but will always be a great memory. Gave it a one of the best meals I 've had rating because it was so good for what it was; quality unpretentious Sicilian food at its best.
