Don't believe the owner of the Pickled Onion when she tells you not to eat at any of the restaurants in town! We had eaten the previous evening's meal at her restaurant, and were planning to eat there again that night, so we asked for...recommendations for a quick lunch place in town. We didn't believe her when she said there was nowhere... so we went exploring and found La Central. Yeah, it's not gourmet cuisine, but if you want some freshly prepared, traditional Mexican food at traditional Mexican prices USD for a chicken plate) this place is great. After lunch we wondered around Santa Elena and checked out the town, then had a peek into the enormous fortress-like colonial church (it was locked, but we could see a little through the gaps in the door). BTW, I recommend the frozen chocolate bananas from the La Michoacana on the square for dessert. They freeze a fresh banana and coat it in chocolate and dried coconut flakes. Yum!
My husband and I decided to check out the local restaurant and it was a great choice. Everything that we tried was fresh, fabulous, homemade food. The ladies were friendly and the service was great. We highly recommend this restaurant. Why pay more for great...homemade food? Check it out!
Amazing time there !! We loved the food and our mamacita One of the best restaurant we had during the trip !
We ate here after checking into our room at Hacienda Uxmal. The location in just off the main square right by the church. The owner was extremely friendly the food was excellently prepared inexpensive. I had an exceptional marinated chicken dish that was...cooked underground, a local specialty. Don't expect five star ambience, just go for the food. Afterwards we stopped at one of the food vendors across the street in the town square bought a bag of churros.
