Food was boldly presented, flavors creative, and service top notch! Highly recommend especially to foodies. This place will get stars.
Things I liked about Avery: unassuming front right on Lower Fillmore that is easy to walk past since there is no sign; thoughtful interior; and really nice touches such as the handwritten menu and beautifully designed glasses and plates on which the food is served. The food was also really nice. We had the tasting menu and there is a great dish there called Coast with delicious pork belly. Not a lot of bottles of wine prices lower than $100 on the wine list. Things that were not great: The service is not where it needs to be for a meal that was $370 for two people who did not drink wine. At that price point there were just too many noticeable mistakes: my coffee was served to the wrong table, our table was missing a candle which we had to point out, we had to ask for a bottle of water twice before the waiter got it, we were served with other than the open hand several times. Again, all of this would have been fine at a lower price point. At $370, the air starts to thin out and you start noticing small mistakes which compound. Also, there is a baby cam pointed towards the patrons on the top floor which really does not set a great mood. So there is my feedback. I wish Avery well. And hope to have an excuse to try it again in the future.
My wife and I went for our 10 year anniversary and were totally blown away. The food was exceptional and the fact the Executive Chef sat us and the Sous Chef ran our courses to the table were some of the nice touches we weren’t expecting. The saki selection is amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat.
I found Avery while looking for a restaurant in which to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was relatively close to the hotel we booked, which was a plus but what convinced me to book Avery was its specializing in sake and champagne pairings with the tasting menu. My wife and I love sparkling wine and were especially excited about experiencing multiple champagnes from small producers. We were not disappointed and both thought that the somm did a good job of matching each pour with the corresponding dish. We are also keen on trying up and coming chefs as you never know if you might end up having the next Keller cook for you. Rodney Wages and his crew did a wonderful job! Food was creative, flavorful and fun (body shots with caviar and Fred)! Overall a great experience making for a good birthday celebration.
