Amami Sushi Bistro - San Bruno

Everyone really enjoyed the Chicken Katsu; it was delicious, crispy, and made with dark meat. They were out of one item but chose to call us instead of just removing it from our order, which I appreciated. If they hadn't called, one person in our large group would have ended up with no food.

I'm not sure what happened to the rolls today; they were really disappointing. They used to be good, but the fish looked old and discolored. We ended up throwing them out.

The tempura was soggy, and while the rolls were decent, they seemed to be crammed into the container to avoid using an extra one. The staff member was a bit abrupt when I arrived for my order; I was there a few minutes early. I tried to be polite, but she asked for my name three or four times, and I had to repeat it just as many. Eventually, she found my order, which was sitting on the counter, tied in a plastic bag with my name on the receipt taped to it, and handed it to me.

We visited on a busy Sunday night with a reservation, and it took some time for the waitress to lead us to our table. Parking can be a challenge since it’s street parking along El Camino Real, and the service was a bit slow, but the sushi definitely made it worthwhile. I highly recommend the omakase! For $42, you get ten generous pieces of nigiri. The fish was very fresh and delicious, and I loved how they were significantly larger than the rice. Their popular sushi rolls were also excellent; we tried the Melts-in-Your-Mouth and Romeo Juliet rolls. The sauces and combinations of ingredients were spot on. The tempura was also impressive—lightly battered and perfectly crispy. As a lovely surprise, they treated us to complimentary ice cream as a sweet ending to our meal. My only slight disappointment with the food was that the grilled squid was served lukewarm. It was still tender, but it would have tasted much better if it had been served fresh and hot.

We had lunch at this restaurant, and everything on the special menu was excellent. The regular menu items also looked good. I highly recommend the Kobe beef and uni. Overall, we give the food a 5/5!
