We went here on Friday night with 9 people for my husbands birthday. It was packeddd but we managed to get a table. We did not wait for a drink or a water the entire night. Our waiter was amazing. Checked on us so many times. Of course the drinks are flawless. The Waterfall and True Azul were our crowds favorites!
A lovely couple runs the bar with an incredible attention to detail, even down to the temperature of each garnish. It’s a true pleasure to listen to them share their passion for their craft and to witness their skill in mixology. However, apart from them, the establishment leaves a lot to be desired. I completely agree with reviewer Regine Faucher that this is definitely not a speakeasy. Reviewer Vanessa Garcia makes a great point that you’d be better off heading to the cozy, hidden gem of Green Lantern for an authentic speakeasy atmosphere. The overly pretentious “welcome to our bar” greeting you receive when you first open the menu is a major red flag. I wasn’t surprised by Mariann Rodriguez’s report of a racist encounter she had two weeks ago. Just last night, a Black man was cut off from being served after a white male (who had the most obnoxious mustache you can imagine) complained about him. This mustachioed individual even claimed that the term ‘Papi’ is comparable to the n-word. As Karina Meyer noted, there seems to be a xenophobic vibe at Rock and Rye. As a Latina with deep roots in San Antonio, I’ve also struggled to find a welcome atmosphere here. While trying to enjoy a lovely Sunday, I overheard their out-of-shape security guard bragging about ejecting patrons with status, including athletes. While some of these situations may have been justified, it’s clear that certain staff members thrive on playing the access card, reminiscent of the Vicci days on 4th Street in Austin in the 2000s. The regulars seem to be groups of suited men with fragile egos, making this one of their hangouts. To be fair, I’ve only been here on a Sunday, but I witnessed one guy in a jersey getting thrown out, which led to the police being called because he was furious about not getting attention from women. There are countless other venues in this wonderful historical city of San Antonio where you can spend your hard-earned money. If you find yourself at The Rim, I highly recommend The General Public; their bartenders and cocktails are definitely underrated!
Stumbled into this hidden gem during happy hour. The Sazerac cocktail hit the spot, and the smoked almonds were the perfect snack.
I visited this place for the first time, and it was absolutely amazing! The female bartender crafted drinks that were even better than those made by the guys—sorry, but it's true! They were phenomenal. We only ordered drinks, but the staff was fantastic. The only downside was the loud group of girls next to us, but it's a bar, so that’s to be expected. I will definitely be back because it was just so good!
