It also came with a salad and a miso soup and white rice. I also got a soda. Combined, everything was like $30, which was a little expensive to me personally, but its the Bay Area so pretty typical. I would recommend and go again!
The food is a solid 4 star, but they lost a star for my experience due to their lack of service. We must have sat down for 10 minutes before a server even came to ask us if we wanted water and take our drink order. I ordered a White Blossom, and my husband inquired about a sale flight. Our server said he would get my drink started, but another 10 minutes later, the bartender came to answer my husband's question, confirm my drink order, and take our order. We got our drink 5 minutes later. We started off with a Kaiso Salad, Maitake Mushroom Tempura, Honeymoon Shooters, and Belly Tasting. The Kaiso Salad is a mix of different wet seaweeds and had a nice tangy dressing to it. I would definitely order this again! The Maitake Mushroom Tempura pieces were quite large and the truffle creme fraiche dip was nice and light. I would prefer if the tempura pieces were a little smaller, so it's easier to eat. The truffle flavor was also very lacking. The Honeymoon Shooters were delicious, and I would definitely order this again. It had just the right mixture of ingredients and sauces to be flavourful yet not take away from the oyster or Uni. The Belly Tasting consisted of salmon belly, toro belly, and hamachi belly. All were fresh, but nothing stood out. May or may not order again, depending on what I feel like. For our main, we ordered the Gindara, Uni Nigiri, Seared Wagyu Nigiri, and Seared Toro Nigiri. The Gindara texture was nice and soft, but I feel that it was a bit too saucy. The sushi was great. The fish were fresh and I would have ordered more, but was too full. A few more comments on the service. Some dishes were appetizers and some were mains, and we expected the dishes to come spaced out since we had a pretty small table. But within 10 minutes, everything was on our table, and it was quite crowded. We also ordered a Botan Ebi Nigiri and it never came. When we asked our waiter/bartender, he then went to check and came back letting us know that it was sold out. This is something I would have liked to know ahead of time and not have to ask for. Overall, the food quality is great, but I would maybe come during a less busy time to hopefully have better service. The waiter/bartender had great attitude, I think there is just not enough service here. This wouldn't be a place I would go to every week based on the service, but maybe once every month or two.
Thumbs up! I've walked by this place so many times, I'm surprised it took me so long to finally try it. I've come a couple of times now and their food has been consistent. Not too pricey as far as sushi goes. They also have ramen on their menu, and I would recommend their Hawaiian ramen in particular. The only weird thing about my experience here is that the first time I came, I ordered a bento box dinner combo, but they gave me my meal on a plate, just like a regular entree in a restaurant. Ok, not a big deal. But the second time we came, my bf was the one who ordered the bento and he actually got his meal in a bento box, like he's supposed to. Not sure why I didn't get the same...?
Give 'em another chance! No, not the guy or girl that screwed you up (well that depends and is another yelpie) but I 'm talking about this restaurant. Reluctantly returned after almost 4 years for a possible change of heart. The kaki fry remains tiny (yikes) and the Katsudan slightly larger in size but tasty (yumsters) and if you like raw, there is a small sushi bar. Place remains clean, casual, good for lunch, with great prices given it 's in San Carlos and is still surviving among competing eateries on Laurel. However, it was the service possibly that would have mamasan coming back. Server was very accommodating!
Not a great sushi place. We should have guessed this was the case when they were empty on a Saturday night, but we were hungry and this was one of the few options around. The service was extremely slow, which was surprising considering there was only two other tables in there besides us. The workers had closed off half the tables in the restaurant, and were continuing to work on closing tasks even though it was 8pm and they didn't close until 9:30. They paid more attention to the closing tasks than to their customers. When I went to pay, the cashier almost charged us for the other table's meal. I noticed this because the total was over double the cost of our meal since they were a family of 5 and we were just 2 people. Overall I would probably not come here again. Its not worth it for the price you pay.
