Think carefully if your favorite omakase meal experience was prepared by a non japanese who also doesnt speak japanese. Now after all that thinking, hurry up and make a reservation as this place is quaint and fills up fast. Book for the bar, and order the chef special omakase..and if you can afford it get every special on the daily list, no need to read them if you dont speak japanese, just order. Sit back, have some sake or tea and prepare for a culinary journey like no other. This Two person husband and wife duo will attend to your every need. As english is the second language in this family the accent can be thick, but take it slow, keep your mind open and communicate your needs, tastes and desires. He or she will explain every dish, every piece, and weather to dip it in your own soy, or not. Listen learn and love. Its umami at its finest. 5 stars..you will taste their art, their love of their culture, and their Mastery in every bite. Watch them move, every cut a purpose. Every wipe a time honored technique. Clean Perfectly organised prep table and fridges. Simple perfected movements that only years of practice and instruction can achieve. And a refined old school taste your tastebuds have been longing to dive into. Welcome..
Roughly five parties can be seated at a single time. Clearly not a large space, but that's the reason it is special. Food and service reflects attention to detail. The relaxing and intimate ambiance is how dining should be. One would have to embrace simplicity and tradition to appreciate Kaiseki. An experience of visual and taste. Trusting the chef to impress you is highly recommended. Omakase! The menu will vary throughout the year. Reservations are required. Service is exceptional. Looking forward to another Kiss.
New owner/ proprietor. Don't expect the same menu as previous owner. This is a completely different restaurant as of April, 2021. I listed the new owner's business as a new business but Yelp put my review with this old/ closed business.
I'll be honest, I found Kiss Seafood after looking through an article on Thrillist SF. Well, my fiance and I couldn't be more happy. Kiss Seafood is the epitome of genuine, homey, well done Japanese style cuisine. Nestled in an unassuming small little space near Japan Town, Kiss Seafood is easy to miss. Once you enter the restaurant, you will see a quaint and intimate setting with a sushi bar (with approx 5 counter seats) and 3 tables able to accommodate parties of 2 or 3. If you're looking for saucy rolls ready to be drowned in a sea of soy sauce, this is not your jam. The husband/wife duo here does fresh seafood and the accentuation of natural flavors really well. They work and focus on high qualify ingredients and instead of smothering everything with heavy flavors and sauces, they allow the natural essence of each item shine. As we were here for celebratory purposes, the fiance and I opted for the Special Omakase dinner with came with a total of 6 plates/courses. We had a sashimi course , a sushi (nigiri style) course, a veggie plate, a small plate of well marinaded seafood (ie. snails etc), and two soups. The overall experience was spectacular and each item tickled our taste buds in a delightful manner. Portions are petite, but at the completion of your meal, you would be satisfied. One cant help but appreciate the time spent on the execution of each dish. Yes, overall the meal is definitely not a cheap one, but for us, it was definitely worth it. As the venue is small and intimate, you receive quite attentive service and as the ambiance isn't filled with overwhelming chatty, it allows for a deep connection with your dinner partner. (Very date friendly). Reservations are recommended due to the scarcity of seating and an open mind to a more traditional approach. I would suggest the Omakase if you have the funds for it; it would not disappoint. On a side note, the team is also well versed in assisting you to find the perfect sake pairing for your meal. Ultimately, the meal came out to approx a tad under $300 for two folks, but note that we did order a carafe of very nice tasting sake with our Special Omakase meal. Would love to come back for another special night on the town.
By far the best all around sushi and Japanese food we have ever had. From the highest quality of seafood, prime service and intimate atmosphere. I will definitely be back the next time we are in San Francisco.
