Things were still hot and the chicken and other meats were moist and juicy. Just the right amount of spice for me to leave a little tingle on my tongue. Service was very basic, don't expect to get much interaction with the staff here. However they do maintain the nan and water at your table, so they won't leave you hanging. $11.98 for the buffet lunch is fair.
I love eating Indian food once a month or so. Bombay Garden, Favorite Indian and Taste of India is the one I always go to since they are closer to home and nothing can beat buffett style of dining. You get to eat almost everything for reasonable amount of price. Good food with great price. This Bombay Garden branch, is in San Mateo though they changed their name now to Gateway India. The ones in Newark and Santa Clara remains the same. Been here twice before when I used to work in Foster City and eat with my co-workers. For $11 per person, you get your money's worth and enjoy the food as well. Service is good. Parking is okay but sometimes get really difficult during weekdays and lunchtime. Will come back again
So now this place is Gateway India, what's different? Same cooks, same food, same decor, even same plates. Other than service wasn't as friendly, the only other main difference is the cost of lunch buffet is down a dollar, now $10.95. So why two star decline, since last reviewing this place my bar for Indian cuisine has been raised. Still a decent choice for a quick Indian bite.
Lunch buffet for $11.95 per person (pre-tax), 7 days a week. Not a bad deal considering the location. Food is decent, though beware of dirty plates and utensils. Their lamb curry is great and so is their freshly-made naan. They did refill our waters constantly, so that was nice. I didn't appreciate being rushed out right after I paid, in order to accommodate a larger party. Street parking in the area, though may be difficult. You're better off parking in the Central Parking Garage. Sanitation makes this place just okay.
It 's easy to impress me. I don 't need a fancy party with caviar or champagne...nor do I need scintillating company...give me the most rustic, homey food and my family for company with some good laughs thrown in...and I am over the top impressed We went in here with low expectations and a groupon $40 worth of food for $29 . I looked at the menu online and it looked good standard north indian . One thing worth noting is prices in the online menu are different from the prices in the printed menu in the restaurant eg. we ordered the Maharaja Non vegetarian Royal Feast for two which is listed on the online menu for $40.95 but was actually $44.95 in the printed menu . That said the food offered and their service was well worth the money spent. We left tummy full and very happy with the courteous service shout out to Harry the host who patiently answered our questions about the meal and was over all wonderful! We also saw a lot of people walk in and out and try their appetizers as a part of a Restaurant Walk...they were leaving blown away with the experience and happy : Now coming to the meal we ordered the feast because we wanted to taste a variety of different things They started us off with the roasted papadum which was brilliant with the sweet tamarind chutney and the spicy koriander chutney. Our appetizers were a malai chicken tikka which was very well spiced, flavored and tender/moist and a sheekh kabab lamb which was flawlessly executed. Our main meal was a Lamb Kheema Matar again executed perfectly, really well cooked and a chicken tikka masala which my son absolutely loved . With these entrees they got us whole wheat tandoori rotis we didnt ' want the garlic naan as it 's cooked with white flour/maida and they graciously substituted...bottomline if you ignore the health flag I have heard that the garlic naan is OUT OF THIS WORLD and mildly flavored basmati rice. They got us an order of Dal Makhani Which was excellent and I lived in Delhi, so I have had some really good Dal Makhani ,a peas and potato curry excellent! and raita it was good! . Harry also got us raw red onions and lemon to complement our meal we asked for it and he remembered to get it for us with our meal . He got us extra tandoori rotis as my family is not a rice eating family at no charge . Our dessert was soft, yummy Gulab Jamoons with Kheer....that my son annhilated. We will definitely be repeating this experience it was brilliant !!!
