This Restaurant is a bit of an enigma. It is obviously well established as there are roadside signs directing one to it in various places locally yet it doesn’t open in the evenings or at weekends. It is however just down the road from our house and every lunch time that we pass it there are always lots of cars and vans outside and we thought that so many people can’t be wrong and that we should give it a try. Having done so we now understood why it is so popular. It offers simple and quite tasty French food served in simple surroundings with the minimum of fuss. When we arrived around 1pm there were already a dozen or more diners who, judging from the types of transport and logos on the vehicles outside were almost exclusively local workmen. We were shown to an empty table and settled down to the menu of the day. Obviously picking up that our party didn’t have the full range of conversational French the Patron very kindly brought out samples of the alternatives for each course for us to see before choosing. We started with a lovely Noodle Soup, accompanied of course by a basket of traditional French Bread, and then had a choice of Cold Meats Coleslaw to follow. The mains were either Potatoes Gammon or for the more adventurous, what turned out to be Neck of Calf! The patron explained but sadly I didn’t understand, I must say it looked ok and so I went for the full French experience and opted for this. It was a little fatty but nevertheless very tasty and it was only when we got home and I looked in the large French-english dictionary that I found out what it was I had eaten. Mains were followed in the French way by a cheese course with the usual suspects and then to end we had a simple dessert. A choice of either thick yoghourt with strawberry jam or fresh fruit in the guise of a pear. All of this had been accompanied by a carafe of very drinkable red wine and we finished off the entire meal with coffee. When we left we had a much better idea of why the Moulin Rouge is so popular, 5 courses, A Carafe of Wine, and Coffee for the princely sum of €12.50 each. You would understand that equation if the food was nondescript and bland but it was tasty, reasonably presented and the Patron was very sociable. So how do they make a profit?
