A lovely little local pub with the best Guinness on draught, just a shame there is no outside space as we love a pub garden.
I saw a very nasty scene at this pub on Sunday, the landlord approached a man sitting in the corner and said I've been watching you, you've been talking to yourself and you're a nutter, get the f.. out of my pub ! The man in question was a well spoken, quite jolly man, and was obviously upset by the viciousness of this ignorant,foul-mouthed, horrible landlord. It was my first and last visit.
We had new windows being installed in our home, so things were a bit chaotic. My wife suggested we go out for lunch at a local pub. The Golden Lion is a short walk from our house, through Manor Park, and we knew they served food during weekday lunchtimes. The pub had been refurbished since our last visit, but the welcome was just as warm as before. Paul poured me a great pint of London Pride. The menu had a good selection, but what was really special was the pricing - buy a drink and meals could be as little as £3.50 per person. My wife and I both ordered the Chicken Burger, which was delicious. It arrived quickly, was nicely presented, and came with a generous portion of chips and a light salad. It was a great meal for a great price of £3.50 per person.
After years of intending to visit, I finally made my way to The Golden Lion pub on a dreary July afternoon in Aldershot. The vibrant public flower displays in the area added a pop of color to the otherwise grey surroundings. The pub was conveniently close to the station, though I took a slight detour past the closed Crimea pub before arriving at my destination. The Golden Lion had a traditional charm, with a recent addition of a rail across the front of the bar. Inside, the bar area featured a brick fireplace that appeared to be from the 1920s, where the friendly barmaid liked to chat with customers. Regulars occupied the favored spots at the bar, while ladies preferred the tables along the street side illuminated by stained glass windows. Despite sports playing on screens, the customers seemed disinterested. I learned about a local artist who used to sketch customers in Aldershot pubs, with one Golden Lion regular still cherishing his portrait. The landlady had a charismatic personality and handled the mostly male clientele with ease. One of the pub's highlights was its competitive drink prices, such as 6 Sambucas for £10, making it a great choice for group outings.
