The hostess never checked in on us, so after enjoying our drinks, we let them know we were ready to be seated. Carlucci’s has been a well-regarded restaurant in the hotel for years, but we were placed at a standard table by the window—far from the out-of-the-way spot I had requested and certainly not quiet, given the large round table of eight nearby. After being seated, we received water but waited about 15 minutes before our waiter finally approached us. He was polite but quite inexperienced, which was disappointing for a place of this caliber. The timing was also unfortunate; our entrees arrived just as my husband went to the restroom. They sat there getting cold until he returned, which took a while since the restrooms are quite a distance from the dining area. I would have expected someone to offer to cover the dishes or return them to the kitchen to keep them warm, but no such courtesy was extended. I had to ask for a steak knife for my husband and a replacement knife for myself. It was clear our waiter was unaware it was our anniversary when he asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu, adding to the disappointment of the evening. The food, however, was excellent—hence the three-star rating. We shared a remarkable octopus and shrimp appetizer, and my husband enjoyed the Costelette di Manzo (braised short rib with garlic mashed potatoes in Barolo sauce), which was amazing. I had the special grouper with shrimp and garlic mashed asparagus, which, while wonderful, was a bit heavy on the butter. For $200 for the appetizer, two entrees, and a bottle of wine, I expected better service.
