Travel from the west, I met Roscommon around approx. 7:00 and felt a little peckish. I spied mother India on the square above the Red Papagei Pub (door on the right) and decided to visit it. As a lover of Indian food, When I see an Indian restaurant and it looks half decent, I will try. No disappointment here, but the opposite. Hors D'oeuvres of poppadoms and sauces were placed on the table when I ordered. WOW was fantastic sauces, they were so good I asked to take some away. After a short wait, my main course of Chicken Madras came with Pilaureis and Peshwari naan. The Madras was seasoned and cooked for perfection, such as the Pilaureis and the Naanbrot. The waiter was friendly and helpful with good service. The restaurant is a little free from atmosphere, but who cares! It is clean and the food, prices and service are very good for me, that is what counts. I've gone since the first visit and it's as good as never. If your lover of Indian food as I am, you will not be dissapointed.
Food lovely...bit of an attitude when quering order though...when we got home realised order wasn't right ,phoned back but error was customer' s fault
Very disappointed. Nothing tasted as it should.,rogan josh was nothing like it. Cheeiad was basically just extremely hot with no taste. I asked for the tarka dhal to be very very mild as it was for my son. He couldn't eat it as it was hot! Chips were terrible. All in all it was mostly put in the bin. Had one from athlone mother India a couple of weeks ago and the difference was unbelievable. Won't visit roscommon mother India again.
You could forgive to go past the mother of India, as this restaurant is hidden on the upper floor with its entrance directly at the Red Papagei Pub on the square, Roscommon. After eating there several times now; you would find it hard to forgive yourself for the lack of this hidden gem of an Indian restaurant. At the top of a staircase you enter Mother India and immediately met with the gentle warmth of Indian spices. The entire ambience is fine food; but the restaurant is relaxed, authentic, gently illuminated, cozy and romantic. Our wonderfully beautiful, charming and attentive waiter was Shakti. We were presented with Papadums to enjoy sitting with different Chutneys and Relishes once. The menu is wonderfully large and well organized in certain sections (Appetizers; Tandoori Dishes, Kitchen recommendations, Mild, Medium, Biryani, Vegetable Main/Side dishes, Rice, Bread) and also has price-Essen offers. Shakti was extremely knowledgeable in explaining the various dishes and offers selections based on personal taste. The vegetarian and the meat remover plate for 2 were wonderful and provided a beautiful introduction to a wide selection of appetizers. The onion bhaji was just the best I've ever tried. For the main course; I have now tried Chicken Dansak (Hot, Sweet and Sour with lenses); Chicken Balti (fruit, ginger, spices and yogurt); chicken bhuna (onion, tomatoes and rich sauce); Chicken Tikka Jaipuri (picium; green pepper, onion, mushroom and tomatoes) as well as the gold standard Chicken Tikka Maisala All were excellent and each dish was deliciously clear. Each main course is served in individual dishes that make sharing and family style/group eating so much fun. The garlic Naan was directly from the oven, light and non-fat and wonderful all garlic. I'm addicted! Prices are extremely moderate. The restaurant also carries a flourishing order for the collection business. Very recommended!
