I've enjoyed dining at Rapscallion multiples times, both for business and personal dining. This visit to was surprising, and not in a good way. The service was terrible and the food was not the quality that I'm accustomed to here. My wife's best salad seemed to be missing dressing and her prime rib stroganoff was bland. I'll dine here again based on previous experience, but would not if this was my first.
Rapscallion is my husband's favorite fine dining restaurant. I took him there for his birthday, we had heard it had changed, I think the Rap is back on track.
Ambience is wonderful...very San Francisco reminiscent. Happy Hour was welcome. Our table of 5 have both seafood and beef entrees. All loved their meals. Our birthday person received a free dessert and a Happy Birthday card on the table. Dinner was leisurely and well serviced.
Excellent first visit to Rapscallion it won't be our last. The front room is a bit noisy and the service was slow ish on a busy night. But we were in no hurry so not that big of a deal. The food really, really good. My wife's artichoke heart appetizer was as good as my French onion soup, which I rated in my top 5 of all time and I'm picky about French onion soup! The horseradish crusted halibut was outstanding, cooked perfectly and a generous portion. The crab and shrimp risotto was delicious but quite rich. Best to split with someone who orders a steak, perhaps. Price was a bit on the high side, but they have 1/2 price wine on Mondays and a steak and lobster special on Wednesdays. Definitely worth a try 4.5 stars.
