In an inconspicuous location, this restaurant is a true mom and pop shop that delivers genuine Szechuan flavors meaning they aren't shy about the tangy, tart, hot szechuan peppercorn in their foods. I highly recommend their signature Big Bang Spicy Chicken/Peanut noodle the chicken absorbs the chili oil, noodles are plentiful, with the right amount of vegetables. Chili oil at the right amount gives the dish a good texture with the crunchy peanuts be sure to mix well before eating. Would eat here again!
Love the noodles and buns, highly recommended but for take out only! They charged minimum 15% tips but this is a food court style restaurant. You place order on the iPad, then grab water and cup and everything else yourself, when the foods done, they leave them on the counter and you go grab them yourself. I don’t understand why it would asked for tips? Basically you do everything yourself?
Those who care about health, avoids msg, have a low salt tolerance, prefer lighter than stronger heavier flavors, and/or do not typically consume Sichuanese food can come here but shouldn't complain or immediately write off this mom and pop shop.Minimal english is spoken but that's ok! Look over the menu on english pamphlets or at the front on the iPad where you place your order. Smart! $20 minimum for cash. Self-serve yourself everything from the eating utensils, cups and water decanter to the food once called to clearing dishes yourselves.Distinctly hyper-regional to Chengdu, some of the dishes here are unlike anything you can find anywhere in the area, possibly the US. When I say that I'm talking about their SIGNATURE BIG BANG NOODLES, aka Chengdu 7 taste noodles. Truly salty, savory, fragrant, sweet, sour, tingling, and spicy all at once. The sauce in the bottom of the bowl--to be MIXED WELL with the noodles and toppings--is the heart and soul of that experience and it's easy to see why this made them famous in 2003 at the first OG shop in Wenjiang district, Chengdu, Sichuan province. This is the most unique dish everyone should order. Good quality peppercorns are used. Stronger in tingling numbing sensation and menthol-ish with an amazing perfumey floral, earthy fragrance that reminds me of dancong wulongs. It's incredible. That and the use of some msg is what most likely contributes to that ambiguously teetering line between too salty and the umami tingling spicy mouthfeel as it's not as salty, fragrant, or numbing as leftovers (not recommended). A love it or hate it dish that can be intensely overwhelming for anyone not used to this kind of flavor profile but well worth trying at least once if not a few times.Their soups--spicy and not--are deep, well seasoned, flavorful, have a richness that tells me the rendered fat is kept with also a hint of an aromatic organ undertone, which I personally like but may deter others. Noodles themselves have a nice bite, moreso dry when not in soup.The fact I'm the only one in my family who enjoyed the food--they prefer lighter fare Cantonese and Shanghainese--and would come back really goes to show Big Bang Noodles is not going to be for everyone but take a chance! If the first visit doesn't work out, try to come by a few more times to slowly acclimate your taste buds to the flavor profiles presented here. Really feels like street or canteen food one can only find either in China or Flushing. Plus everything other than a handful of dishes are $10 and under. Truly a hidden gem for Jersey that's easy to miss going down route 1 (watch out for HAPPY EATING signage).The main reason I suggest coming more than once is that the experience of their food can be dependent upon how busy they are. Fantastic when my fam and I were the only diners there for a late lunch with not many take out orders happening. Add a few couples and some take out orders on another visit with my party of 7 and it can get overwhelming for the couple in the back. It's just them working so mistakes and mix-ups can happen and their food may taste different compared to when it's at its best. Not guaranteed but just something to note and consider.4 stars.
This is the best restaurant with authentic Sichuan cuisine in the Edison are. We came here per a friend’s recommendation. The quality of food blew our mind. It’s a small menu but everything tastes so delicious. The level of spicy is on the higher end. I would love to come back again in the future.
