It is oftentimes accompanied by a shallow dish of runny soft-boiled egg, soy sauce and white pepper which serves as the kaya toast’s dipping sauce. When served together with kopi, strong hot coffee that’s been laced with condensed milk, it makes for a breakfast of champions.
This place smells so good! It made me feel that I should always look forward to every new morning. Their Coffee Bun is as awesome as I remember. I just hope that all their stores would be less gloomy. I suggest they put up more or brighter lights.
After pigging out at the nearby Korean Chicken, I dared my tummy to take in another round of sustenance (really! . This time, dessert/bread and cold coffee/chocolate. As I was entering the empty cafe, I was flooded with good memories. You see, I used to write for this early morning show (many moons ago that we used to come over after. And we always ordered the same things: coffee with coffee buns or Kaya Toasts with Soft-Boiled Egg. Took me a little longer to order that day. I stood there in front of the counter trying to make up my mind. I just wolfed down a heavy lunch so something sweet would seal the day's venture into pig-out city. I ordered for coffee bun and cold mocha. I knew what my order would taste. I wasn't really the bread nor the cold beverage I was after then but to relive the memories of many years ago. Now, the store looked old, smelled old. It's a bit dark, gloomy, cheerless so very different when we used to take our breakfast after the program. How I wish that the owners would re-market the brand and compete with the aggressive ones. Kase may laban naman. There are silent loyalists out there. Like me.
Kopi Roti opened its first branch in the Philippines in 2005 but was founded in Singapore in 1955. It is primarily known for its kaya toasts paired with soft-boiled egg (P110). Kaya toasts are made with kaya jam spread on toasts crisped on a charcoal grill. The jam is a mixture of coconut, sugar and pandan flavor. Butter is also dabbed on the toasts before serving. This is best dipped on a mixture of soft-boiled egg, soy sauce and pepper which constitutes a typical Singaporean breakfast. We had this together with their Kopi bun (P50), Chocolate bun (P50) and a Milo Dinosaur (P105). These were our comfort food when Kopi Roti started making waves in the country. I just love sinking my teeth into the crusty, freshly baked coffee or chocolate tasting bun and be greeted by warm oozing butter in the hollow center...yumm. It's like seeing an old friend I've missed for a while and there is a lot of catching up to do.
The crunch the sweetness of the spread and the right saltiness of the egg damn perfect combo in a rainy afternoon. I Usually have this for breakfast :
