A gem in South Goa. Top class hospitality and even better food. The best pork pie I have ever had. Amazing crabs, possibly the best meal I had in Goa.
Wherever you are staying in Goa, and however far you have to drive for it, you will be missing out on a hidden gem if you do not include a visit to Palacio De Deao in your itinerary. A painstakingly restored Portuguese Villa with a beautifully maintained garden, a visit here is a history lesson of the best kind. Reuben and his wife bought this property that was completely ramshackle and restored it. This is not the first property that Reuben has restored, and I am so happy that people like him are around to ensure that we do not forget the beauty of the past. You HAVE to book a table before you visit, and do go with an open mind and empty stomach. There is no menu, there is no choice of dishes. Reuben wants to know whether you are veg or non veg, and then there follows dish after dish after dish after dish...... of delicious Goa/Portuguese food cooked by his wife, whom we sadly did not get to meet but who we send all our compliments to. You are taken around and given a brief but interesting tour of the place, and then are invited to have a long lazy lunch, walk about the property, take pictures, enjoy the delicious Uraak with kokum juice, and spend some happy hours taking in an ambience and an atmosphere you get nowhere else in Goa. Ending the meal with homemade bebinca made by Reuben's wife is the best way to end a fabulous meal. You suddenly realise that the stuff you get in the shops is so so so mediocre.<br/ This is not just a home. This is not just a hotel. And this is not just a meal. It is an EXPERIENCE! Bringing the best of two worlds and two timelines together. Every sense is awakened, and every sense is more than amply satiated.<br/ <br/ And none of it burns a hole in your pocket!
Firstly the beautifully renovated Villa will blow you away. The perfect place for an afternoon date. The host Mr Ruben welcomed us and gave us a tour of the villa telling us about its history. Then began our 5-course lunch of 15 dishes. The meal was nothing short of perfect. The flavours were perfect! The crab was the best I have had in Goa. Will visit it again on my next visit to Goa!<br/ <br/ P.S. you have to make your reservation a day in advance and notify them of your preferences.
