I last wrote a review of Les Sens in 2016!! Last night had the delicious jeudi gourmand menu with friends and as always was pure ecstasy, both for the tastebuds as well as eyes!
If you are within 100km of Puylaroque it’s worth making a detour to eat chez Thierry, Restaurant Les Sens. Charming, small dining room; an intimate, friendly,relaxed ambiance (some english spoken . Gentle, warm welcome by highly professional waiting staff/sommelier. Thierry has a passion (almost religious ! about his ambition, which is to put before you plates which are a myriad of colour and taste, aimed to please your eyes and stimulate your taste buds. Each refined plate is an orchestrated mixture of tastes harmoniously combined. Products are mostly locally sourced, often bio; indeed, the herbs and flowers on your plate may well come from the small garden just in front of the restaurant. The sommelier will guide you in finding appropriate wines, mainly from the region.
We had the 6 course ‘surprise’ degustation menu, and it was delicious. The staff working front of house were charming, welcoming and we got excellent advice from the sommelier on our wine pick. We’ll definitely come back if we ever visit this lovely corner of France again
My wife and I spent a month in Puylaroque, staying in an AirBnB right next door to Les Sens. During this time, we enjoyed chatting with the head waiter as he went about his daily preparations for lunches and dinners. As the days ebbed and flowed, we appreciated the mirth and merriment of the clientele and the general ambience of the place. In celebration of retirement, and life in general, we booked a lunch reservation for the truffle extravaganza--a 5-course affair punctuated by amuses bouches (nos bouches se sont bien amusées). Since neither of us eat meat, we asked if it would be possible for the chef to make accommodations. He was happy to do so and we left the meal in his very capable hands. We were glad that we did as he came up with a delightfully, delicious sequence of fish and vegetarian fare in a counterpoint of delicacy. Our waiter was happy to welcome us as guests and took time to explain each course and recommend a lovely pairing of dry while wine--a Chardonnay from the area. Each course came as a surprise--beautifully presented and varied around the truffle theme, from sliced, to infused, to foam and what seemed like truffle stardust essence. The vegetables were fresh and floral garnishes freshly picked from the garden that morning, a few metres away. Highly recommended and worth a detour as you wend your way into Quercy country. Puylaroque is a laid-back friendly place with a summer arts programme and deep history: etched into the buildings, people and stories.
