Max's Allegheny Tavern - Pittsburgh

A classic, old-fashioned restaurant. Our meals were outstanding, and the waitress was friendly and highly skilled. I would definitely return in a heartbeat.

This vintage North Shore restaurant offers a great atmosphere, featuring a stunning bar and classic dining rooms. Having grown up in Germany and Austria, I found the food somewhat lacking; however, it's important to keep in mind we're in Pennsylvania. My sauerbraten didn't quite hit the mark in terms of flavor and consistency—the sauce was overly thick and dominated by mustard, lacking the refinement I expected. The warm potato salad was decent, but the red cabbage had an excessive vinegar taste. On the positive side, the service was attentive, and the rustic atmosphere added to the experience. Prices are reasonable for American standards, with lunch costing around $20 to $30, including tip. The extensive menu of German-inspired dishes certainly warrants a return visit. I'm impressed that they use veal for their schnitzel, which is how it should be, so that's what I'll try next!

The food at this restaurant is incredible, and there are plenty of options to choose from. It’s a charming place located in the heart of a small town in Pittsburgh. We enjoy visiting it before attending a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game.

A great local spot in the Deutschtown section on the northside of Pittsburg. A great selection of authentic German cuisine. Friendly service, home style atmosphere and reasonable prices make Max's the place for a great time.
