25 June, 2016. The small town of Pilani in Rajasthan, is also home to a hidden secret: there is a very old establishment which sells a traditional milk-based sweet, the peda. There are two shops, of which Mahaveerji is perhaps the more famous of the two. We have visited the place quite a few times: one in 1987, once the next year, and then...in 2016. The place has become a bit more modern, from its small humble origins, right in the centre of the old city. The establishment starts boiling fresh cow milk (with sugar added) long before, in traditional large iron vats, which then solidifies with time into a brownish delicious mass. This is shaped by hand into oval-shaped entities, with two depressions created with the fingers. These delicious sweets are embellished with crushed cardamom seeds (badi eliachi). We carried home a box In the late 1980s, the sweets used to run out in the morning itself, and there was usually a crowd outside the shop. We were delighted that the production had been increased manifold right now, with the same heavenly taste still there in the sweets.
