We have been going here for years and even through some changes in ownership and price increases, the food remains excellent! This is our go to spot in China Town.
One of the best places in Philadelphia to try delicious and authentic Chinese food. Their dumplings are incredible and juicy, and the great thing is they actually make them. Their salt baked triple is a delicious dish with a nice mix of crispness and softness. I have been eating at this place for years and they never miss.
I'd passed this place so many times before in Chinatown and always wanted to give it a try. So, a few weeks ago, I came in for dinner with my husband and a friend. It is a really small, hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but something about it feels very homey and authentic to me. We ordered the tofu pot, Chinese broccoli, sizzling pepper steak, beef chow fun, and fried dumplings. If I were to come again, I would order the same things (except for the beef chow fun which was nothing special). My favorite was the tofu pot. The fried dumplings were also different than what I'd had before. They were the size of small empanadas and deep fried and drenched in sauce. Not the pan fried dumplings I was used to, but I really liked them. The waitress was also very attentive and constantly came back to fill our water glasses. All in all, I would come back and eat here again!
For a touch of nostalgia, I opted for hot tea, which, although a bit weak, was still pleasant. I also ordered the Beef with XO Sauce, a rich, umami dish featuring tender beef slices, snow peas, carrots, scallions, and a mildly spicy seafood-based sauce that's a staple in Hong Kong. Served with steamed white rice, this dish is all you really need to enjoy your meal. I’ve dined here before, and the quality remains consistently high. The portion sizes are generous but not overwhelming, and the focus on flavor is truly commendable. The Yang Chow Fried Rice is among the best I’ve ever tasted, even compared to what I had in Hong Kong, and their dumplings are bursting with flavor. If you find yourself in Chinatown, I highly recommend skipping the usual spots and trying Shiao Lan Kung instead. They stay open late on weekends, making it a great option for a post-party meal. Just be prepared for a lively, late-night atmosphere that might remind you of a 1 AM Waffle House experience, if that’s something you consider. Trust me, you won’t regret visiting Shiao Lan Kung!
