Breakfast is really good here, but lunch is where it gets special. Deli sandwiches and salads piled high, with great sides that make it hard to choose. The soups are meals in themselves. I over-ordered and took mine to go. It was nearly 32 oz of tasty, hearty mushroom barley soup. The fries are delicious planks of fresh Russets with the skins on. The potato pancakes are dense and crispy and flavorful. I really like their pickles, which I think is the true test of any respectable delicatessen. The brisket is fall-apart tender and so good. All portions are ridiculously large. One brisket entree provides enough meat for nearly a week of meals. I know because it did!
Found out the other day that my boyfriend had never been here, so we changed that! We came in on Friday morning. We're able to find street parking easily which is always a good thing! We started with the pickles which I love! I ordered the corned beef hash with eggs. My boyfriend had the grilled Reuben with the potato latkes. We also had the fries. Everything was incredible, including the service! I love it here. Always have. It's beautiful to me-the windows, the light fixtures, the tile. Such a wonderful place to enjoy some really great food! Yes, it can expensive but the servings are huge. You can absolutely split a sandwich or you can take leftovers home and enjoy it again! Well worth it!
Famous 4th Street Deli was fantastic in our visit yesterday. The vibe inside was great (tons of energy, lots of natural light, impressive baked goods counter) and the food may have been even better (loved the potato pancakes, corned beef hash, and breakfast sandwich). The only possible issue is that things can get pricey, but with massive portions and obviously good quality, I'd say things are justifiable. Will be returning!
Just a classic spot in Philly! Everyone should go at least once if they are from the Philly area. We got the BLT, matzoh ball soup, and potato pancakes. Everything was over the top delicious and giant as a true deli meal should be. The decor is what you want from a classic deli with famous people pictured all over the walls, classic booths and window views and even a table with a plaque from where Obama ate. Our only issue was it took awhile to get our waiter to come back to the table to get our check/ more drinks and stuff, but everyone was super nice. Of course I'll be back to try another meal!
If you are ever in Philadelphia, you must stop at this place! I wish we lived closer and could go more often! This time we tried a few new dishes and all were delicious. Also tried a few we had before and were still just as good! I don't think you can go wrong here! Food: Potato pancakes just as good as I remembered and love the apple sauce where my husband prefers the sour cream. Husband got the huge roast beef and loved it! Plenty of meat! Good rye bread and he enjoyed the potato salad Chicken noodle soup-absolutely delicious!!! Macaroni salad-so good! Hot dog-on the challah bread-so delicious! The way a hot dog should be. Carrot Cake-so tasty Funfetti Cake-tasty as well Chocolate chip cookies-the best! The inside is not too large and some of the tables are a little close but I think that is part of the charm. A lot of famous people have visited throughout the years and they have pictures on the walls as well as placards at the tables where they have sat. Our server was attentive and even though it was a full house she checked on us and the kitchen was rocking with getting food out. Love that at the end of the meal everyone gets a decent size chocolate chip cookie!
