I traveled to Hiawatha to fill up my gas tank, which was cheaper than in town, and decided to have breakfast at the restaurant as well. The cooks at this establishment are skilled home cooks who served up a delicious meal, just like your mother would. It's a popular spot, so be prepared to wait for a seat, but it's definitely worth it. I highly recommend this eatery, 100%.
I went to Hiawatha for a late breakfast and tried the little feather dish. It had delicious poached eggs and amazing grilled potatoes. The food is always fresh and consistently good here.
When I went to get my tank filled last week they had closed the whole building in respect of a woman band member. This is the first time that this has happened to me in the six years of using their services which is remarkable. They are ultra friendly staff and that carries on to the customers. In my other review, I did not emphasize that they have an up to date souvenir shop on the premises with pictures done by the residents to buy hanging on the walls.
Because the Old Rail Stop is on the Hiawatha First Nation, the gas is always at least 6-8 cents less a litre, and often 12-15 cents less. Come with an empty tank to fill up! But come with an empty stomach too because the restaurant is a little gem. Don't expect anything other than a plain, standard diner in terms of it style, but DO expect a beautiful view of Rice Lake, very friendly staff, and good food at a ridiculously good price! If you come on the weekend for a mid-morning breakfast, expect a short wait for a table.
