Imagine my surprise when I accidentally found it on one of my morning walks around our stay. It was once a mansion with abundant beach acres, hence the name. Now it is a resto in the middle of rentals. The ordering is fast. You order, then pay. We chose to eat in the backyard with an ocean view and many picnic tables. The grandchildren enjoyed running around the grounds and even went to the playground equipment to play.Service on a weekday night is excruciatingly slow. We didn't get our order until 1.5H later. My shepherd's pie was better than my wife's soupy steak and mushroom pie.The prices are good but the wait can be a deal killer.
Dog friendly! Food was great and everything that everyone else had looked really good! It was busy but the food was great!
If you are in a hurry or want table service or are picky about your food this is not the place for you. Instead, it's a very casual operation in an historic old 1921 home. You place your order at the bar and unless you are there outside of normal dining hours you should expect a wait of 30 minutes or more (they gave us an estimate of 40 minutes and that's close to what it took). There must be 20 or more picnic style tables on the front lawn overlooking the Georgia Straits and most were occupied with families, many with small children. (Their website states "sleeping babies and well behaved children are welcome.") Inside are a number of rooms where you choose your own table. In addition to a full bar there is a very large number of draft beer options as well as a small selection of wines. This kind of place always cries out to me "Stick to a burger!" which I did except it was a lamb burger and a very good one at that. In short, a fun time was had people watching in a very interesting old place.
There is an inside pub eating area, or large picnic tables outside. We went on a Tuesday night, which we thought would be slow but it was very busy. We had to wait over an hour for our food, which they warned us about before ordering. Not much for vegetarians, typical english pub food. I did order the morrocan veg pie and it was quite tasty. Servers were all good. When the food arrived everyone seemed to enjoy their meal.
We stumbled upon this place and I would suggest that most people would cruise right by not even knowing that it's there. Let me say that I was pleasantly surprised. We met another couple and we each had our kids in tow. The weather was brilliant so we sat outside on the large picnic tables. The service is English style in that you order your food and drinks inside at the Snug (bar). Our server was extremely kind and helpful. I was really impressed with the food. A couple of us ordered the fish and chips. The portions were generous and the fries were cooked to perfection. We also had a spinach salad with feta and strawberries. It was excellent. Most places over dress the salad. This was dressed to perfection. Our companions had the English Ploughmans and it was also excellent.Excellent selection of beers both local and from the UK Overall, I think the the Black Goose Inn was a wonderful surprise and well worth the visit. Would love to try it again when we are next up Island**there is also a great little playground for the kids. Nothing fancy but it will keep them occupied ;)
