La Portella - PANTELLERIA

This is a very simple place where you can enjoy some typical local food (pizza and salad pantesca) at a reasonable price, being served with a nice smile by the staff

So this place was recommended for pizzas, we decided we would like a couple to take away with us so we could sit on our dammuso's terrace to eat them. In order to do this however we had to go through the ordeal of dealing with an elderly dragon lady on the till whose idea of customer service to to shout, be intimidating and impatient. Ok I get that they are not used to foreigners who don't speak Italian, but instead of shouting, why not let your customer sit somewhere for a few mins to study the menu and then let them order? Yes the other customers sitting in the restaurant for table service were more important, I get that too. Guess what, even non Italian speakers know what pomodoro and mozzarella is, it is written on every Italian menu from here to Timbuktu. Anything else we don't understand we can use google translate. It would have been easy, except that the lady would not stop interferring and demanding to know what we wanted to order without giving us a chance to read the menu. Luckily we ended up with 2 pretty decent pizzas which had everything we wanted except for some mysterious out of place German-type frankfurter smoked sausage thing which was picked out and fed to the cats.

The restaurant is quite ok but the bar is horrible. The pizza is good, pasta is not. If you are a tourist you are not welcomed at the bar and the barwoman does not know the word service. She is the archetype of the unpleasant and chauvinist people you have to evade.

We had a nice dinner at La Portella pizzeria in Pantelleria. The starter was very good, with typical dishes from Pantelleria.The pizza was very nice but the waiting was a bit long. Bacio Pantesco dessert was very good!!!

The torta salata (vegetable omelette) is exceptionally tasty. The ricotta cake is light, tasty and melts in your mouth. Great to find top quality food in a little place and non pretentious looking bar. Photo features cafe marocchino, yummie!
