Great find in Paekakariki. Good coffee, food and friendly staff. Happy to switch out honey dressing for me. Also serve alcohol.
With only one listing on Happy Cow for the area I didn't feel hugely optimistic that I would find anything interesting to eat. WRONG! Great service, excellent vegan choices, superb coffee and laid back vibe in this cute coastal town. These two delightful women are genuinely interested in providing great food and service. When I went back the next week they remembered I was Vegan. Exceptional. Updated from previous review on Thursday April 21, 2016
I heard the place had new owners and is now a vegetarian / vegan café so was ready to give it another try. I was ahead and was underwhelmed by their vegan options, then so was really excited to see an updated herbal menu. I saw no meat/fish so that part is good, but there was practically nothing vegan. The menu reminded me of veggie cafes around 1990s all strongly egg and cheese oriented. The one vegan offer was a kumara soup for $15, which is a lot to pay for soup and is not an exciting option. We asked the opponent to be sure there were no vegan baking options and she said no. She asked another employee who said it was a bit vegan in the closet, but we didn't know what it was when there was a vegan product there it was not labeled and everything looked icy / ugly. I was quite shocked that not a muffin, scoone, cake, sandwich or anything else was vegan all over the place. I mean, it's 2022 and veganism is quite well known and you would expect more from a café that advertises as vegetarian/vegan. Funny enough her FB page shows photos of vegan foods. Maybe they think they have a vegan option once, is enough? But the coffee was good and they had at least one vegetable milk option. Updated by previous rating on 2022 10 15
Just for lunch because there is nothing else in the village. It's 'funkiness' on the grotty side of quirky. Inside there are advertisements for the recognition and equality of people who are ironic as we were treated. Despite a 'vegan food on the menu ' sign on the door, vegan options are very limited. In the closet was a drying samosa. My 11-year-old daughter said she was happy enough. When I asked an older woman I took as a manager what other options were there, the bean soup was told me with Wogel's bread. Not exactly what I was looking for, but we were tired and hungry, so I agreed. She got it all and said $25.00. I was shocked to ask the amount. The Samosa alone was $10.00, with one side of salad it would have been $17.00! Soup, with basic supermarket bread, was $15. When I said that was too pricy for us, the woman immediately went to the defense saying it was homemade (do you not want to expect that at all? and vegan. The fact that her bean soup was vegan meant it was more expensive. OK! (I think every vegan reading this will know the price of a homemade veggie soup! Since the aggression is directed at us, I said, "No thanks, we leave it." When we went out, she cried to us: 'There is a MacDonald 's on the street for you!' We took their implication to mean that, as we unprepared to pay for their 'homemade food', we were not better than mass produced 'fast food eaters', which 't care what they ate. I was stunned. I've never eaten there. She pulled a face and wore it to her next client. All at the café were with us. When we cuddle my daughter, we hurried the feeling of being humiliated and abused. My daughter was a vegan of all her life and has held away invitations to birthday parties in McD. She was really upset by what had been told us, as I was for various reasons. So vegans, if you want to be exploited while a very limited menu flavored with abuse, go to the Perching parrot. Or take 10 minutes to the road to Paraparaumu, which has a hell of a pizza with a number of vegan pizzas to go out.
