Our flight did get in very early and we did request an early check in, she was not nice or receptive at all... she said she would call us... finally at like 2pm, we walk back up to the desk and she's like oh hold on let me check and had something ... like, why did you not call us? You're annoying. I've checked in immediately at hotels like la concha and Condado Vanderbilt which are usually my go-to's... Room was pretty basic, nothing amazing... needs to be redone... I thought it was gonna be nicer? Whatever, we were barely in the room, out galavanting all day; drinking in the sun! The bartender at the pool, Pedro, was hilarious and def memorable from our trip... he catered to all of our needs and knew we wanted to have a good time! There is a Ruth Chris in the hotel but who the hell wants that when you can go get some authentic **** from thaaaaa streeeets! Don't get food from the hotel, over priced.. you can hit up market place across the street for breakfast for cheap! And do alambique (they're open for breakfast all the way until night time; empanadas and bartered mahi mahi), Plato's is ok; it's down the block if you want something quick, decent... metropol; down the block, food is good! HiJole; had the chorizo and chicken nachos, they were awesome... lupis; a bar that I def blacked out at Hahahaha; 38 ounce margaritas...los chamos arepas! Hit this place up; they have the best cachapas; thank me later... anyway, good area and it's safe over here .. good for family trip or just a quick girls/lover getaway!
No. Just no. Don 't be fooled. The place is dirty and very poorly run, and I 'll tell you why. I 'm finally getting around to reviewing after staying here in June. I hopped to different spots on the island to visit my family and friends and stayed at this location twice during that time. The first time, we were given a club room. We booked on-the-fly using hotel points since we rack up a TON, (and plans to stay with family fell through as they were very sick). Absolutely immaculate. Little room, but perfect for the night. The staff was great checking in and the bellhop service with bags to the room was very courteous and friendly. The room is 1st floor so you literally walk right out to the pool area, to the beach, then can head right back to your room from the patio. Also, the club lounge area is 24 hour with coffee, tea, snacks, and you can get breakfast and dinner there. I was so excited to stay again a few days later. I didn 't even mind that I had to park my car across the street. Boy, was I in for a shock later! We check in and the place is SWARMED with kids. Clearly a prom or similar function was taking place. The same very sweet woman who had checked us in just days earlier was there and she apologized for the commotion but assured us that we 'd be on a high enough floor not to hear the party below. When you 're traveling quite far to get away and enjoy vacation, luxury (this is a 5 star, 4 diamond place), and relaxation, you 're supposed to get what you pay for! It only got worse when I saw the room. It was filthy. The linens had stains, the floor was very visibly soiled, and the vent had black mold. 100% unacceptable. I call the front desk and they told me the would charge me to change rooms! NFW! My husband and I took video and pictures of the room, went downstairs and asked for a manager. The manager gave a half-hearted apology, didn 't care about the video or photos, and reluctantly gave us a new room. We get keys to room #2. Someone had already been there!!!! We walk in and see a drank water bottle, opened used soap in the shower, and another room number written on the pad by the phone. Clearly, someone came in the room, found it to be unsatisfactory, moved, no housekeeping was done, and then the room was assigned to us. I 'm livid at this point. I go back down to the front desk. The same manager snapped back at me and told me it was out of her control and not her fault because she 's not housekeeping staff. Wtaf?! No apology. I told her my grandparents ' house out in campo was cleaner. I demanded another manager, another room, and an upgrade for the trouble. At that point, she said another manager wouldn 't be necessary, and she 'd take care of it. We get upgraded to room #3, a club room, but it 's not on the 1st floor. I didn 't care at that point; I just wanted a clean room. Room #3 is exactly the same setup as #2, just on a higher floor. It was clean so my husband and I accepted it and returned the old keys. While on the lobby level, I try to go to the club area to get a coffee. My key won 't let me in. Back to the pissy manager woman! She tells me that we 're not club members, so we don 't have access to the club lounge area. I 'm fuming. Not only are we staying in a club room, but we were club members just days ago! I showed her our hotel membership and status, and she said our high status with the hotel chain did not grant access to the club lounge. It was like the twilight zone. It made absolutely no sense. We stayed here for the final 2 nights in PR (close to the airport) and this place ruined my vacation. I will never stay here again and would warn anyone and everyone to do the same if for no, other reason than the concern for sanitation as the housekeeping staff (and managers) clearly dgaf. Will attach photos and video if I can.
The Intercontinental is a beautiful hotel in a convenient location (10 minute drive from the airport). The hotel experience itself was average. Some pros and cons: Pros: Outdoor Pool Area: awesome pool and hot tub open 24 hours. A pool bar allows u to be in the pool and order drinks at the same time. Beach: also open 24 hours. Free chairs from dawn to dusk (umbrellas are 10$ a day). The water is the best I 've ever been in! Beachside restaurant/bar and lots of locals walking up and down the beach selling empanadas or homemade sorbet. Staff: most of the staff was very polite and accommodating. Room service was good. Room: I know some people in other reviews complained about the decor of the room but I thought it was very appropriate for being in San Juan. Cons: WiFi: hands down the worst WiFi of all time. Nowhere in the hotel was it consistent. Constantly went out or just didn 't connect at all. No Fridge in room: we liked to go out to eat most nights to try different Puerto Rican food. We would love to have been able to bring that food back but we weren 't able to because there is no fridge. Instead there is a preloaded mini bar with sensors in them. If you take a soda out you 're charged something absurd. Same with the candy and chips. Don 't touch any of these items or your room will be charged. Balcony: our view of the ocean from our room on the 15th floor was amazing, but the balcony is way too small. There are no chairs or tables on the balcony for you to be able to sit and relax while enjoying the view. Bathroom: way too small. I 've been in hotels for the same price and got a bathroom 3x the size of the one we got. The water in the shower never gets hot enough. Taxis: DONT TAKE TAXIS! They 're a complete ripoff. You will pay 25$ or more one way to a location 10-20 minutes away. We used Uber for all of our trips and had no problems whatsoever. You will have to meet the uber a block away from the hotel as they have blocked uber from picking you up directly at the front doors. This last note isn 't really a con but I had to mention it because it 's funny. The outdoor pool and beach area allows you to rent towels from a machine called the towel tracker . You swipe your room key and it opens a door to clean towels. The sign says all towels unreturned by midnight will incur a 20$ room charge. However to return your towels all you do is drop them into a large laundry bin. I thought it was odd you didn 't have to swipe your card again to return the towels, so I asked several of the employees how they know which towels are from which people. And they all told me with a straight face that every towel contains an electronic chip in them and that 's how they track them. LOL! I guess they fool a lot of people with that line since I never saw towels from anyone left near the pool or beach. Overall the experience in San Juan was amazing but largely because of the places we visited and the incredible waters we were able to enjoy. The hotel stay itself was average.
I stayed at the InterContinental San Juan from Friday Monday. My entire stay was exceptional. We arrived too early to check in, so the receptionist gave us some drink tickets and allowed us to enjoy the amenities. We truly did. We enjoyed some delicious Miami Vice frozen drinks. In the meantime we also enjoyed lunch by the beach. And started planning our weekend itinerary with Nestor the Concierge. I feel like every hotel in the world should have a Nestor! He is the true definition of hospitality. He answered every question and pointed us to the correct areas. Emily in the Front Desk was also a gem to work with. She kept us informed about our room status throughout the day. The club room is also fabulous. We enjoyed wine and snacks before heading out to dinner. I am already planning my next trip to PR. The General Manager should feel very proud having an amazing team like he does.
For entertainment, this place is a bit cramped, with minimal seating and low ceilings. Though, the band we saw on Saturday night was pretty good. We ordered drinks, the prices were pretty high--about 20% higher than the much nicer San Juan hotel next door. That was shocking. The bar has an outside with fire pits, so it's a good look.
