The Whisky Vaults - Oban

I am giving this place four stars even though I really enjoyed it. Due to its age and size, there are some limitations. It is a charming hotel that has been operating for a long time in an old building with a lot of history. It is a great place to spend time in. We only stayed for one day and wished we had more time. The stairs are steep and winding, so you need to be cautious. The check-in is on the ground floor. John, the front desk person, is very friendly and efficient. He carries your bags upstairs two at a time and gives helpful recommendations for local restaurants and attractions. The rooms are located on the higher floors and are small, as expected in an old building. They seem well-maintained, with professional caulking in the showers. The rooms are neat and clean, although there are no outlets in the bathroom. The shower stall is small but functional. The bed is firm and comfortable, but the pillows are not great. The bath towels are huge. There is not much workspace in the sink area, and the entrance is a bit unusual. During regular hours, you enter through a small door near the reception area, and after hours, you use a key to enter the building. You also get an actual key for your room rather than a card. There is a bar attached to the hotel with an impressive collection of 320 scotches. I tried a sample of three Islay scotches for 35 pounds, and the bartender was very knowledgeable. The bar area has a great atmosphere. There is also a cozy bar area with a fireplace that is not always staffed, so you need to go to the main bar for service. Overall, it is a unique and enjoyable experience that should not be missed.

We only went to the pub shortly before closing for a whiskey tasting. Bar waiter, very knowledgeable. Great welcome and exchange. We were not disappointed with the selection he made for us. Very nice setting and very nice terrace. Service: 5 Location: 5 Hotel highlights: Quiet

We didn't stay at the hotel but the bar is amazing. We were recommended to check it out by the staff at the Oban Distillery and I'm very glad we did. Great selection of whiskies and very friendly and knowledgeable staff who are very happy to talk you through some of them. Service: 5 Location: 4
