Riviere Gran Cafe - OAXACA DE JUÁREZ

The food was so bad it was laughing! Total lack of presentation and taste. This in a city known for its fabulous food.

We are full-time residents in Oaxaca and Rivière Gran Cafe is one of our favorites - especially for their menu del dia. Price at $120MX (approx. $6US) is a real bargain. The menu includes an Agua fresca, appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee or tea. The restaurant, as the name suggests, is French and the menu reflects that with wonderful creamy soups, lures with bechamel sauce and desserts like tarte tatin a la mode. A selection of menu items and breakfast are also offered. A recent meal began with fresh pineapple agua fresca, followed by a creamy vichyssoise. The entree had organic chicken breast in a curry, orange sauce with cuscous and steamed carrots — Dessert was a perfect 4-bit tart tatin with a small vanilla ice shovel. A steaming cup of lemon tea was a perfect finish. Believe me, you're not hungry! The waiting staff is super attentive and the owners - with their loving daughter - are usually around. The room is open and airy. We really like to eat here. The site also shows French films and offers French language workshops. What more can I say except C’est magnifque! Buenisima!

The location and seating area are very nice. The waiter was attentive and friendly. The prices were excellent. I ordered the pomme chai waffles (the one with homemade chai ice cream above) and my friend got a caramel crepe with the coffee ice cream. Unfortunately, my... gun... wrecked. I can't decide whether it was made before, frozen, and then reheated OR made bread with French toast style and pressed by a waffle manufacturer. It was crispy/crusty and definitely not a traditional waffle (which was disappointing because I had seen the same order on Instagram and it was definitely a real waffle). It was super dry and would have been impossible without any syrup if there were not two small pots of ice on top. The crepe was simple. A single crepe filled with cream cheese (a Mexican staple food, I swear) bathed in caramel sauce, embroidered with ice. Basic, but solid. When we go back, we probably explore the Omelettes and stay away from the crepes and waffles.
