They are on the smaller side, but they appear to be made with cake batter (I think), which definitely gives them a denser texture. This also makes them feel less dry and much nicer to eat. The shop itself is quite tiny and has a charming vibe, resembling a mix between an antique store and a cozy hoarder's space, which I found delightful—it felt very inviting. The woman working there was an absolute treasure to talk to, and her passion for the doughnuts was evident. I meant to write this review earlier, but I wanted to mention that I tried the vanilla coconut and chocolate peanut butter flavors. Both were recommended by her and they were fantastic. I was especially keen on the coconut one and definitely plan to return for more the next time I'm in Vancouver!
The food is fresh and delicious, offering a completely unique experience. I visit several times a week to pick up meals for my clients. The only downside is that they don't accept credit cards, only debit cards or cash.
Harmony is truly an institution. I picture it has been around for 50 years and will continue for many more. You don't go there because their donuts are the best, although they're certainly excellent. You definitely shouldn't go if you're in a hurry, or you'll find yourself feeling overwhelmed. People visit for the charming presence of the two older ladies who work there, for the cozy space filled with boxes and extra seating used for storage, and simply because it's an iconic place. It has always been, it will always be, and yes, the donuts are a real treat as well.
I waited in line for about 10 minutes on a weekend. When I walked in, the staff didn't seem very friendly or welcoming. I mentioned that it was my first time there and asked about their menu. One of the employees simply pointed to a tray and said, "Whatever is on the tray." I did manage to find a small sign near the cashier that listed the menu, and I decided to try one donut with almonds and another with peanuts. While the staff wasn't very helpful during my visit, the donuts were fresh out of the fryer and reasonably priced. They were nice, but not particularly exceptional in flavor, so I don’t feel a strong urge to return.
Even though they only serve one type of donut base—a plain cake donut—don’t let that put you off! This donut is exceptionally delicious and truly ranks among the best cake donuts I've ever tasted! They also offer a range of unique glazes and toppings to try out, but my personal favorite is the classic chocolate glaze. At just $1.50 per donut, the price is unbeatable for a dedicated donut shop that isn't Tim Hortons. If you find yourself in North Van and are looking for an amazing donut, you definitely need to check these out!
