My second trip to Nome I packed breakfast bars because there's no way I'm going back here. I hope they make some substantial changes soon. Nome needs good restaurants.
Polar Bar is a simple bar in Nome but fits the bill. People looking for some amazing experience should probably stick to the Lower 48 but Polar Bar works. Friendly bartenders and good, strong drinks!
This was our first stop while in Nome. First finding the place is a bit interesting. It looks closed (but we realized later all places look like this in Nome). Once inside, its a pretty marginal place but has great views. I am all about hole in the wall places, so I can deal with dated décor. The service was also marginal. The server was not very friendly and obviously new and could not answer any questions about the menu. However, I will say, she would get the answer and come back, but her demeanor and vibe was that she really would rather be somewhere else.. we were interrupting her day. But the one good thing is the food! We were very happy with our order if you like basic staple type food. The cook is to be applauded. If they could just clean up the place a bit and hire friendly staff they would have a 4 star place!
Tried the ABC omelette and biscuits and gravy, breakfast was good, the view was great
It was lunchtime and I wanted breakfast and this place does breakfast ALL DAY. The entrance to the restaurant is at the side of the building, towards the back it's confusing because the entrance to the bar and the liquor store are at the street. But there are signs at the side of the building to lead you to the restaurant. As I was looking for it, there was a man in front of the bar entrance and he motioned to the side and said the restaurant was over there. I asked him if the breakfast was good and he said that it was and also mentioned that dinner was good too and recommended the salmon and the halibut. He then laughed and said he knew it was good because he cooked it he was the cook! Of course he would say good things about this place haha. I went in, and the interior is not fancy at all it's kind of hole in the wall, typical of places in rural Alaska. The tables and chairs are kind of mismatched. The walls are decorated with random paintings of flowers and scenery. One of the servers said I could sit wherever and I made a beeline for one of the tables along the windows that face the Bering Sea. It was actually a cloudy, gloomy, overcast day and so the view wasn't super pretty, but it was nice to look out at the sea. Another server came by and dropped off a menu. I looked over everything but I knew that I wanted breakfast and I picked the two eggs (scrambled with reindeer sausage! I love reindeer sausage! You get to choose between hash browns or home fries/country potatoes (I chose the home fries and your choice of toast (I chose light rye . The food came out pretty quickly. I thought the breakfast was really good (maybe I was super hungry . My scrambled eggs were a little bland, but that's what the salt and pepper on the table are for. The sausage was really tasty. But the home fries omg. They were AMAZING. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside and they were flavored what's the word...PERFECTLY. I ate everything. (Toast was good too. The server was super friendly and I chatted with her a bit. Service was excellent! Food was tasty. And there's a view! I would definitely come back if I were to ever come back to Nome!
