We sat at the counter, which I recommend, so that we could watch the chef cook the food. He was also a really nice guy and we ended up talking a lot. He is new to vegan cooking, but he is really excited about it and he is planning to expand the vegan menu to include new items. He told us that he uses separate grills for vegan food and non vegan food to reduce the risk of contamination. He also was able to tell us what drinks were vegan or not, and which ones had additives that might not be very healthy. They had vegan certified sake from the local brewery, Nanbu Bijin, on the menu. I ordered their umeshu (plum wine) it was delicious! This sake is made without any additives so it's completely natural. The menu has a variety of vegan options. The chef also said that he can make things that are not on the menu. For example, grilled vegetables, etc. I'm looking forward to going back sometime and seeing how the menu has changed! Update (March 2023): We finally got a chance to go back to Ninohe and try all of our favorite vegan foods there again! We were especially excited to visit Teppanyaki Rai again because the chef, Shiga san, told us that he had been developing some new vegan menu items in the past year! One of these new options was vegan okonomiyaki! Available with all sorts of add ins (different kinds of vegetables) and made without using flour, it is a healthy and delicious version of okonomiyaki! I am definitely going to try making it at home sometime! We also ordered the garlic rice, peperoncino pasta, and pizza senbei, same as last time! Everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the pasta! My husband had Nanbu Bijin Umeshu and I had Pineapple juice. About half way through our meal, Shiga san told us that he had developed a vegan dessert, a crepe (made without any eggs or milk) filled with vegan ice cream and anko, topped with kinako, date syrup, and fried goma senbei. It was AMAZING! I literally have never eaten anything more delicious than that. I was already pretty full by the time dessert came, but I could have eaten two more because it was just that good. I absolutely recommend it. I will be going back as soon as possible Updated from previous review on 2022 03 13
Teppanyaki is one of the the most popular kind of restaurants in Japan. With Teppanyaki, the chef will cook meat, seafood, and vegetables while you watch. Yes, this kind of restaurant usually uses animal products. But, this shop is not a normal Teppanyaki restaurant. Amazingly, we can enjoy Teppanyaki even as vegans. They cook vegetables and plant-based food in front of us on the iron grill, just like normal Teppanyaki. It was so exciting for me. Because, I 've never been able to go to a Teppanyaki Restaurant since I became vegan. Their foods were really good and creative. I was so excited when I tasted their Senbei Sandwich. This food is prepared with Nanbu Senbei, Plant-based cheese, rice and wheat gluten. It was so amazing. Plus, they were so kind. For example, they show us what kind of ingredients and seasonings they used, so I was relieved. Also, I enjoyed talking with them while they prepared our food. I 'm sure that you can enjoy the food and good conversation in this shop. Updated from previous review on 2022-03-13
Liked Plant-Based Pizza on the Nanbu Senbei that is made from local sourced ingredients.
