I absolutely love those little sponge cakes, especially the original and coconut flavors! They're small and wonderfully fluffy. My son enjoyed them as well. They've recently increased the price by $2 for a dozen cakes, but I still think it's quite affordable.
I absolutely loved this place; their sponge cakes were the best—so airy and fluffy, unlike anything I could find anywhere else. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the quality has been declining lately, making it a bit hit or miss. I stopped by today and ordered an original sponge cake and a pineapple flavor, which I'd never tried before and was curious about. When I opened the cakes, I realized I received a purple taro or yam cake instead. I didn’t ask to change it since I was already seated. Additionally, the tops of both cakes were hard, almost crispy. The girls sitting next to me were chatting and mentioned that their cakes had no pineapple flavor at all.
I was in Chinatown last Saturday with my daughter in law in search of sponge cake.We had been to a very adorable sponge cake cafe across the street, but were tipped off through YELP to head to Kam Hing first this time.We found Kam Hing easily enough, it seemed like an older establishment. There were two disgruntled looking cops at one table eating sponge cakes, but otherwise, everyone else looked happy and to be really enjoying their snacks and beverages.Once we go to the counter, we found out that they were completely out of flavored sponge cakes, but had plenty of the plain/classic flavor. We were bummed, but flexible and ordered two plain and an iced tea.The very nice guy behind the counter asked if we wanted out sponge cakes hot and fresh out of the oven, we said sure and OMG, neither one of us had ever had sponge cake this good, it was like we were floating on the ceiling, it was that good. A complete revelation.I ended up buying two boxes of 12 to take back home to share. I've been passing them out the last few days and people CANNOT get over how fantastic these sponge cakes are.
Passes the Chinese bakery vibe check as upon entering, Chinese elders sitting and lounging here were staring at me as if I'm from another planet. Good good.Hard to not compare the sponge cakes here with the ones at Spongies Cafe. Ultimately I prefer the ones at Spongies Cafe (stronger flavor and more raised/fluffy), but not to say that the ones here are bad at all. The sponge cakes here are more dense, which results in a heartier bite. They're more in line with Filipino Red Ribbon Bakeshop mamon, which I do quite enjoy.Overall this place is worth a peek if you're craving for sponge cakes (or just never had a sponge cake and want to try)!
