Took off a star because the outdoor dining experience was not as nice as expected the booths are not fully heated (there is some heat but it is not strong) and they have these loose fabric curtains that don’t block out the wind. As a result, the booths are extremely cold so you have to wear a jacket, and your food gets cold quickly. Due to the fabric curtains, you are also fully exposed to people walking and talking (or shouting) along the sidewalk. I would only make a reservation for indoors (lesson learned). Obviously, the food was amazing. The chrysanthemum salad was probably the best salad I have ever tried. The lasagna and garlic bread were excellent, and the Japanese sweet potatoes were a pleasant surprise they are these delicious little cubes covered in sauce/cheese (for some reason I expected them to be mashed). The tiramisu was unique and tasted great, with an interesting mix of flavors and textures. I will definitely be back here, but I was disappointed with the outdoor dining experience given this is a Michelin stared resturant and we are 2 years into the pandemic.
Wonderful service and a very cozy atmosphere! We actually just came here for dessert and a nightcap after having dinner at Via Carota, but we ended up ordering the famous lasagna because it was my first time here and my friend convinced me that I absolutely had to try it. It was incredible and definitely worth gorging ourselves. I’m pretty sure that lasagna is 70% cheese! The desserts and the drinks were great. Can’t wait to return on an empty stomach so I can try all the other items on the menu. The last drink shown in the last photo, was some type of digestif. I can’t remember what it was called, but it was delicious; I highly recommend trying it!
This probably has to be one of the hardest reservations I’ve tried to get but my friend finally got a call back for a standby reservation at 10pm on Wednesday just after I’d won a Broadway show lottery for the same evening! Talk about luck! Being our first time, we went with the favorites lasagna, chrysanthemum salad, and tiramisu. The lasagna was indeed incredible, just so creamy and cooked to perfection probably the best I’ve had. Whether it’s worth the struggle of getting a reservation is open to debate though. The salad was also good and loaded with Parmesan not life changing though. It is still just a salad after all. The tiramisu was the perfect finish and Don Angie’s does their own creative take on the classic dessert using Black Forest cake which didn’t disappoint.
Come for the lasagna, stay for the excellent everything else. This is one of my favourite italian restaurants in the West Village, which itself is hyper concentrated in terms of high quality italian fare. Their uniquely spiralling lasagna definitely lives up to the hype (its different to anything you’ve probably seen before) but honestly the other dishes were better. Not pictured were the japanese sweet potatoes which were incredible, and the veal milanese which was perfectly cooked. Drinks were excellent as well and service top notch can this place do any wrong?!
This is definitely top class traditional Italian with a chef who seriously knows the craft and is brave enough to try new things. Coming back after a few years it still surprised me with its food. The portions are on the smaller side, so order accordingly, and if you can order to share!
