Updated to add: Just because it's the law doesn't mean these places should rude us to leave. We entered with our 8-month-old son, and the woman bluntly informed us that children under 21 weren't allowed. It's disappointing that a town that claims to be family-friendly doesn't have any family restaurants. We won't be returning.
Make sure to stop by MaryScott's Kitchen for dinner whenever you're in New Harmony. I can't get enough of the Shrimp Grits; it's my go-to dish, and it's always cooked to perfection! A big thank you to Mary and Scott for introducing this wonderful spot to New Harmony. And a shoutout to our server, Emily—we appreciate her too!
The menu wasn't the typical selection of steak, burgers, and chicken wings that one might expect in a small river town in rural southern Indiana. Instead, the offerings were as enticing as those found in a trendy bistro on Rush Street in Chicago. So far, everything checked the right boxes. The question was, would the food meet our expectations? We started with a goat cheese appetizer and a Caesar Salad, both of which left nothing to be desired and only heightened our anticipation for the main courses. We opted for the recommended wine pairings for our entrees, and they were delightful—especially at just $6 a glass. My wife ordered the Shrimp and Grits, which was exceptional. I had the Garlic Ginger Chili Shrimp, and I can only say that Scott's wife, Mary, truly works magic in the kitchen. To finish our meal, we shared a chocolate crème brûlée, which added to the overall experience. Since we were in town for two nights, you can probably guess where we dined the second night. Hats off to this couple living their dream and delighting patrons with truly excellent food and dining experiences. Their talent gives us a reason to make our visits to this little haven more frequent. I highly recommend that anyone visiting New Harmony seize the opportunity to experience MaryScott's.
My girlfriend ordered the filet of beef, served with carrots and potatoes. While this dish might seem simple, the presentation was stunning. The portions of carrots, potatoes, and beef were perfectly balanced and complemented each other beautifully. The filet was cooked exactly to her liking—medium rare—and she said it was the most flavorful cut of beef she’s ever had. I chose the Mahi Mahi with mango salsa and garlic rice. Although the fish was slightly overcooked, it was still packed with flavor. Cooking fish can be tricky, so I didn’t mind the slight mishap. The mango salsa paired wonderfully with the Mahi Mahi, and the garlic rice was an excellent addition. The highlight of the evening came when we ordered a special birthday dessert. Earlier in the week, I had spoken with Alisha about arranging something special for my girlfriend. We were served the most decadent tiramisu we’ve ever tasted, made fresh for that night. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. If I could suggest one improvement to enhance the dining experience, it would be to adjust the music and overall ambiance to better match the menu. A more intimate setting with jazz music, rather than the local radio station, would create a lovely atmosphere. Overall, MaryScotts is a delightful find in this charming, historic town. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting New Harmony.
