Keine Weiterempfehlung.
Since 1978, I have been eating at Zur Sonne in Dilsberg, a small, medieval, walled village located on a hilltop about 25 kilometers east of Heidelberg (just past Neckargemuend). The food there is 100% authentic German cuisine and is masterfully prepared. My favorite dish is the Wildfantasie, which consists of wild boar braten and venison braten, cooked with fruit, and served with red cabbage and Schwabian noodles (spaetzle). It can also be served with potato dumplings (kartoffelkloesse). The ambiance is very homey (gemuetlich), with hardwood tables and benches, wood-beamed ceilings, and a large, beautiful German tiled stove (kacheloefen) providing a very gentle warmth during colder months. The last time I ate there the menu was not offered in any other language than German and I'm unaware if the proprietors speak English or, if so, how well. While may discourage some travelers from trying Zur Sonne, that would be a mistake. Experienced travelers know that in foreign countries the best local food is usually found in restaurants that cater to local patrons. Hence, such restaurants located in non-English speaking countries have no need for an English-language menu. In fact, experienced travelers seek out such restaurants, knowing that the quality and value of the food far outweighs the potential minor inconvenience of ordering from servers that may have only a rudimentary command of English (or none at all). However, in my almost 40 years of eating at Zur Sonne I have observed that the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating of all their guests, and I make it a special point to eat at Zur Sonne any time I'm in Germany. In fact, I've made it a special point to take all of my closest friends and family to eat there, too, and all of them have been profusely complimentary about the food, ambiance, and service. Even their restrooms are spotless and scrupulously maintained. In fact, I can think of only one area of potential improvement for this restaurant and this issue is beyond their control: parking space. You can either park outside of the walled village and walk up the hill several hundred meters (quite an effort) to Zur Sonne or you can drive into the village and take your chances of finding a parking place. There is very limited room for parking in the vicinity of Zur Sonne, a natural and predictable consequence of having a modern restaurant located in a quaint, country village, founded literally 1000 years ago, where the cobblestone streets were designed for the passage of foot traffic and ox carts. Thus, early arrival for dinner is highly recommended. While Zur Sonne is a little off the beaten path, sometimes that's where the best local restaurants are found. Google Maps should guide you right to it and it is well worth the 30-minute trip from Heidelberg. Just remember the key is to turn left at the "Festung" sign once you reach Dilsberg. However, if you visit Zur Sonne, you will be rewarded for your adventuresome spirit by the absolutely delicious cuisine, the superb service, and the satisfaction of an outstanding culinary experience shared by very few non-Germans.
On top of the hill in Dilsberg, this restaurant provides good food at decent portions. The service is good and quick. The restaurant can surely be recommended if you come to the town for a short visit.
