Everything looked incredible to me, except for the fish, which seemed a little worse for wear (though I assure you, it’s perfectly safe to eat). One of my biggest impressions of this place is just how immaculate the World Bakery and Restaurant is—so spotless you could practically eat off the floor! My wife returned from the bakery side with glowing reviews, so I had to take that into account when placing my order. I opted for the authentic black beans over white rice with a side of yucca, which is honestly the best I’ve ever had in Florida (and trust me, I know my yucca; my ex from Lauderdale was Cuban and taught me how to make black beans, rice, and yucca). I’d drive all the way to Naples just for that yucca! A side note: yucca is similar to potato but less starchy. I also ordered the shredded beef with peppers and onions, which was absolutely fantastic! Rebecca, my wife, chose the black beans with black rice and added a side of yellow rice with pork and chicken, both of which were amazing! She also got the shredded beef along with an oxtail, which I requested to try. The portion sizes are huge—our two orders could easily have fed our family of five! The service was wonderful, and while the restaurant’s décor was somewhat dull, the tables and chairs reminded me of Sunday banquets at my grandparents’ small church in Kentucky. I wouldn’t have minded eating this incredible food anywhere—even in a ditch! The only mild criticism I have is that the oxtail was a bit dry, likely because we arrived at the end of the lunch service. With drinks and tip, our total was under $40, quite reasonable given that we essentially ordered four entrées. Then, like kids at Christmastime, we wandered over to the bakery side, marveling at the array of pastries, pies, and cakes. Many locals were there picking up desserts for Sunday dinner after church. The cakes and their decorations are truly remarkable; just looking at the ones on display made me want to carry one out for a special occasion, but you can also order by the slice—each slice is as large as your face! Wanting to sample a bit of everything, we got a couple of tortes (lemon and pineapple), some cream horns, and one cannoli. With the exception of the cannoli, which was still good, all the desserts were fresh and outstanding! Now, onto a topic that might spark some debate: the rivalry between Cubans and Italians. Thanks to the sizable Cuban population around Miami, there isn't exactly a Little Italy there. Yet, I know for a fact that many Italians love to spend time in Miami and Lauderdale. I can only imagine that at some point, a Cuban and an Italian had a friendly argument over who makes the better cup of coffee, and that’s how the rivalry began! No one disputes that Cubans serve up a mean cup of coffee that will get your day going, just don’t underestimate the Italians and their espresso! So, folks, stay in your lane and let Mama handle the recipes! One last note: all sandwiches come from the bakery side.
If you're looking for delicious Cuban food, this is the place to go! The food is fantastic, with a wide variety of options available. They also offer bread, coffee, and desserts. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I highly recommend it!
