L'oeil De Boeuf - Mouthe

Very good quality of meals, love of trade and heartfelt felt in the plate. hot spot, I relive you hard to stop and spend a very good time of gust. it is very nice to have a restaurant where the kitchen is made home. They soon returned without hesitation.

You will not pass L'Oeil de Boeuf, in Mouthe, easily because it’s not really on a route to anywhere but if you are in the general area of south-eastern France, next to the Swiss border, this wonderful restaurant is worth the trouble of finding because this how eating out used to be in France. The style of cooking is French Alpine – sort of Escoffier Haute Cuisine but simplified. I nearly said Escoffier Lite then – but the food is absolutely not for the diet conscious. Loads of cheese, gallons of cream, fries to die for – a heart attack on every plate. But the food is sublime – clever, subtle, beautifully presented and incredibly affordable. The only downside is that the service is a bit slow. Well actually, very slow because the whole of the front of house staff comprises of one, very harassed, young lady who is maitresse de maison, waitress and cashier. Still, worth the wait.

Having tried a few local good value auberges, we thought we would try a 'restaurant '. L 'Oeil is easy to find on the main road through Mouthe, opposite the Tourist Information shop. The main dining room is upstairs, decorated in typical country hunting and skiing style. As it was 1st November holiday the cheaper 'menus ' were not available, so we chose from the €22.50 menu. We were given an amuse bouche of mini potage whilst choosing. The waiter (owner I think) was very busy, buzzing about, but very efficient, and the dishes arrived with perfect timing. I had Morteau (local smoked sausage) in Forestiere sauce with figs to start; this was the best dish I had eaten in our week in the area. This was followed by duckling with cherries and a quinelle of artichoke hearts, also very good, whilst my wife enjoyed mushrooms followed by a faux-fillet. For desert I had Tarte Noisette and would thoroughly recommend this too, whilst my wife had the cheese board including the local Mont D 'Or. We had a kir and a beer to start, and a small carafe of rose, total bill €57, which for the excellent quality of food and service was a bargain. By no means Michelin, but well cooked country food at a fair price.
