Only people in good health and balance should attempt it. Once you reach the top (via an unstable ladder) you step out and can only stand in one spot in other words you are not permitted to walk around to get a 360 degree view of the area. You are rushed to take a couple of pictures in that one spot, because there is an assembly of people behind you. It is very unfortunate because of the difficulty in reaching Montauk Point via a one lane highway and then to be cheated out of what could be a great view at the top. It is not fair or reasonable for tourists seeking a unique experience to spend the time and money for very little at the end.
They stay open until 6pm on Sunday. Parking was free after 4pm we got lucky with that. Otherwise it's $8 to park. Tickets are reasonable. For the museum and to climb up the light house. It was only $15. Beautiful views all around the area. Great photo ops! Only down side was the 1 hr wait to go up the light house. The staff is friendly and helpful. There's a gift shop and bathrooms are right behind the shop.
Such a shame the opening hours are so short in the middle of summer, 4pm!!! One upside of going after it's closed is parking was super easy, traffic not an issue and the late afternoon light was magnificent.
Couldn't believe they are charging $15 each person. It would've cost me $60 for my family and I to see the lighthouse.
A beautiful place, with a unique location that allows you to enjoy the horizon in all its splendor. From New York it is 3 hours by train, (you can leave from Jamaica or Penn Station $20 each way) I arrived with the purpose of visiting the lighthouse and I found a small but very nice town, with beautiful and very clean beaches, a perfect space to have a picnic and enjoy a great sunset. The museum tells a great story, especially that the lighthouse was used to detect enemy vessels. Admission to the museum costs $15. After visiting the lighthouse, the day is short to enjoy the town and its beaches, the food is very good and seafood predominates. It really is a great place to visit, to keep in mind there is no public transportation, you need Uber or a private taxi in this place it is cheaper to take a taxi. One day is enough to enjoy the town but if you decide to stay, you should keep in mind that accommodation is expensive and especially take into account the train schedules, the last return train leaves at 10:00 pm
