Cafe Abrigo Da Serra - Monchique

Abrigo da Serra was not on our original itinerary, but we found it winding our way up to the Foia peak and I'm glad we did. Sitting on a precipice that juts out from one of the many bends in the mountain road, it has a cute little lemon orchard just below it and outstanding views out to the Algarve coast. Unlike many of the restaurants and attractions we visited, English is not strongly spoken here, although our server did a better job of it than I did with my limited Portuguese. You might want to have a translation app handy for anything more than the basics, though. However, the flipside of communication issues is the wonderful local authenticity of the food, especially the area favorite piri-piri chicken. It's got a real kick, so make sure you've ordered plenty of water before you dig in! Deliciosa!

We have visited this tasca cum café cum restaurant many times, whilst travelling on the road from Aljezur to Monchiqu, either just for coffee, a quick snack or lunch. This time we stopped for lunch on a Sunday expecting it to be busy which it was. The menu is typical Portuguese food from the 'serra ' good honest and pretty well all meat which does not suit my non meat eating wife. However lucky enough the several dishes of the day included 'lulas recheados ' which you no longer see very often due to the labour intensive work involved. They were fabulous- accompanied by their own sauce and hand made chips and side salad (on request) The usual azeitonas, bread, water, half litre of local white wine and coffees was about 30 euros. Just the job but beware of places selling the frozen variety!

A popular place for locals. Very casual and quite basic but the food and service are both good, as is the price. We had the piri piri chicken to share, which was tasty and enjoyable.

Was cycling in the region, saw this place and decided why not. Typically English I know no Portuguese of note but had no problem getting coffee, coke and a toasted cheese and ham sandwich. The owner (I guess) was very helpful. If I'm cycling here again I will visit again. Great value as well. 6 euros for that and a bottle of water.

Simple food, very tasty and the best views you can have whilst eating. In the Algarvian mountains with views down to the sea. There is nowhere better
