OVERVIEW: The restaurant is at one end of the six rooms comprising the motel of the same name (at which we also stayed that evening). The interior décor is simple but with a decently charming rustic theme – think of an old-style hunting lodge. The cuisine is simple and simply prepared, but uses very fresh ingredients and is very competently cooked and served.PROS:This restaurant delivered on two fronts.First, it was the best haddock we had during our trip, by a significant margin, and in fact the second-best we have had in our culinary lives. Side note: we expected to eat wonderful haddock and mussels during this trip, but on the whole, and especially in the case of the mussels, neither materialized. So the haddock at the Red Cap was a more than welcome reminder of what should have been. Haddock is the focus of this restaurant: you can order it pan-fried, broiled, grilled or deep fried, small portion or large, with or without the “signature” lobster sauce. I had a large portion of the deep-fried, my spouse had a small portion of the broiled, and we both had the lobster sauce, along with house-made potato chips and a small medley of fresh sautéed vegetables. The haddock was simply outstanding, the chips were very well done, and the vegetables (oddly often a problem with Nova Scotia restaurants) were fresh and tasty.Second, this was the most economical dinner out (we did cook our rooms a couple of nights) during the trip by a factor of two, i.e the next most economical dinner was twice as expensive. The price was influenced by the fact that they advertise that there is no corkage fee – very unusual for a restaurant that is, indeed, fully licensed. BTW there is an alcohol beverage store just down the road. The wait staff are very friendly, and both they and their kitchen are very accommodating.CONs: None.WOULD WE GO BACK? We’d love to.WOULD WE RECOMMEND TO FRIENDS? Yes.
We came for dinner and has the pan fried haddock- so delicious! Spinach salad was fresh and had a dollop of this amazing goat cheese. Loved the wood all around and you. And see the water from front of the restaurant. The staff are the friendliest people around. A sweet little spot
We love their pizza, garlic fingers, and a starter of fresh kettle chips. The food is super yummy, and the staff are really friendly. The restaurant itself is very cosy, although we sometimes call ahead to order the pizza as a takeout item. We take out-of-town guests here, and they're always impressed!
Me and a friend went to the restaurant for supper the other night and was shocked at the portion size....very skimpy and small orders. The waitress was lovely...the restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. When we left the restaurant we were still hungry.
