We went looking for a place to eat rather late. We ordered the mixed meat (grilled kabobs) and the house specialty, along with green wine (it's light and gently sparkling ). They provided figs and port after the meal. It was simple, honest food in a no fuss environment. Sometimes that's all you need!
A very authentic Portuguese for experience, this is where the locals eat. Good food and atmosphere, the service was good. Beware of the free bottle of port which is put on the table when you are finished eating, especially if you are driving.
Slightly confusing method of getting customers into the restaurant, which revolves basically around customers walking in, sitting down, and waiting to be noticed. Odd, but friendly nonetheless. The restaurant is also not the easiest to find for one who does not know their way around town, even with a map or GPS.One is automatically given fruit and meat before ordering: which is not complimentary. Still, it was an adequate replacement for a starter. The salmon steak I ordered came, actually, as two salmon steaks. Both were huge. They were served with vegetables. I could not finish them, there was just so much food for the price. Upon leaving we were given complimentary port, which was pleasant.
Ate here our first night in Mesao Frio. Restaurant is in a room behind a bar. Upon walking into the room, several tables were occupied but there was no member of staff present to show us to a table so after 5 mins waiting I went back to the bar and spoke to the staff there. I was told to take any table I wanted. Several plates containing slices of cheese, melon, cold meats and a tomato sweetcorn and onion salad then arrived on the table. The menu is basic and simple, consisting basically of steaks and fish. Most were available in half or full size. We declined starters and had mains of steak, salmon and fried whiting fillets. All were served with grated carrot, sweetcorn and potato crisps (chips to any US readers). The salmon also came with boiled potatoes. A large bowl of rice was also served. The large portions of salmon and whiting were exactly that. 2 large salmon steaks, and 3 decent sized fillets of whiting. Food was tasty enough, although nothing special. 2 bottles of local rosé complimented the meal. The bill came to €51 for 4 of s without deserts. Although the "free" dishes served before we ordered were added to the bill- about €1 or €2 each. Before leaving we were each served a complimentary glass of locally produced port - a nice touch.
